I decided to quit the subtle tactics and all the snipe hunt string chaos theory, and built my own set. It's my fave gauges for each string, after all the "research". We will call it "custom light gauge".

I believe it will be ideal for my F30R...

Big E .52
A .42
D .32
G .24
B .16
Little E .12

All strings manufactured by D'Addario, PB alloy. Strings by Mail.

The irony is it's basically a true light gauge set but the Big E is .52 lol.

Seriously, I spent extra for the same set except the big E is .52 and not .53. I believe we call that an “idiot” tax. However, the .52 is better for me, so my plan is to keep them on the F30r for several months.

Neat idea! I've never tried building a custom set. To me good ol' EJ16 is unbeatable. I experimented a lot with just whatever strings were around when I was younger but I settled on EJ16 + EJ38 for acoustic 6 + 12 and pretty much never looked back. I do remember liking Earthwood from Ernie Ball for 12 string but Daddy's phosphor just wears better. I did recently get a set of something called "Flat Tops" in the same gauges (EFT16) which is supposed to cut down on string noise. Haven't put those on yet but I'm planning to try them on my D20, see how it sounds for recording. I've become so much lazier about changing strings as time has gone on, I guess I don't really mind that "aged" tone these days. I used to be obsessed with changing strings in my teens and twenties, and as all the 12 stringers on LTG will know that can be a painstaking business especially when you're first learning.

You'd be surprised how long lasting they are, years if mostly unplayed.

I noticed how old my strings were a couple summers ago, set about replacing old EJ16's with other strings, on my D5-CE a set of Santa Cruz Medium tension, and what a letdown, the old EJ's sounded better?

I now leave them on as long as I please, unless they sound bad.

I plan at least to leave this “custom “ set on till post move. That’s like a month. Maybe I will be also drawn to their broken Inness by then.
