I just bought my first Guild, a D-30 (with pics). What should I know?

Hello Guild enthusiasts, I'm new here. I'm new to Guild.

I just purchased a D-30. It's big, blonde, beautiful and bold. I stopped by a favorite pawn shop and saw it on the wall. I played it but was not impressed. The instrument needed a good setup. It was practically unplayable and dirty as could be. Dust, grime, grit and I'm not really sure what all the stuff on the strings was. I passed (price $1,000) but took photos of the label and serial number. Later that night, I searched online for information and found some, including in this forum. The next day I offered $750. The owners said $800 and I said "sold." Then I started working on it, cleaning it up, setting it up, playing around and trying things out. Beneath the grime and dust and without the gunky strings was a beauty! (See pics below.)

It came without the original case, but a heavy gig bag. The instruments dates to 1992, made in Westerly, so it predates Fender's purchase. What can you tell me about it?

I love it! It joins a large fleet of guitars in my collection. It's my first Guild. I've admired the brand for years, but with limited funds and lots of different styles that interest me, I decided to buy cheaper guitars that needed some TLC. Injured guitars are my thing. They're cheap, and I've fixed up many to be great players! I've also learned a bit about construction, maintenance, setup and repair; even improvised in some creative ways. If all else fails, I can play it slide! Anyway, the Guild is a keeper! I really like it, and I'm curious to know more about it. Particularly the electronics, which function wonderfully and sound full of life! It's fit with an LR Baggs Duet that I can find nothing about online. (Not the more common, apparently, Duet II.)

If you have one, have played one, wish you still had one, or have a story about your D-30, please share it here! Thank you!

Welcome aboard, Hawk.

That's a beauty.

Welcome to the wonderful world of Guild guitars. You will enjoy them.

I think those are aftermarket electronics. It implies that someone cut a hole in the beautiful maple side to mount that thing. Oh well. I have nothing to offer on that.

Best wishes. Oh, and some US Guilds might be inexpensive, but none are cheap. :)

Congrats on the new guitar!

I purchased a D30 off Reverb a few months ago from a pawnshop. It arrived with a broken X brace and the top starting to cave in behind the soundhole. I was set to send it back after talking to the seller and he said he couldn't sell it in that condition so I could just keep it and he'd give me a full refund. Well, being the amateur luthier I am, I glued and clamped the braces that were broken or cracked over night and voila...free great sounding guitar. I dialed in the setup soon after and it plays like a dream. Here's a short clip of mine shortly after the repairs. Mine's a 2001.

Yeah. My first impression was that it was damaged in shipping and that's what I reported to the seller. After being refunded and told to keep it, I looked really closely at one of the pics in the ad and I could see what was the same pattern as the cracks in the top on the edge of the soundhole. I didn't notice it before buying but it didn't look like cracks anyway. My theory is that they knew the guitar was damaged before shipping it, they insured it and were able to make a claim on it, either through Reverb or UPS, and get paid instead of having a guitar in stock that they couldn't sell. Just a theory and I have no real proof. Either way I got a free guitar out of it.

Holy crap, indeed, Dave! That's the kind of deal I love to hear about.

Welcome and that is a beautiful Guild! Two things you will find out if you spend time here is that 1) we are enablers and I have a strong suspicion that won’t be your last Guild and 2) we are a little bit obsessive about truss rod covers being mounted upside down. FYI - Yours is mounted upside down.

Congrats Hawk and welcome to the LTG! Indeed this was a great score, imho. I also really like your attitude and approach at large, above. Very cool and encouraging.

I do not know much about the D30, outside of it was previous called the G37, and there is a photo of Ry Cooder playing one in Hans Moust's Guild Guitar Book.

I did have a question, in one photo, it looks like the bridge pins are brass, yes? I have gone that way on my F30R and really like the added sustain.

Yes, brass bridge pins. Somewhat uneven, but they are solid and probably help sustain resonance.

I needed to know that before I decided to buy it, Brad. Maybe I could have got it cheaper🙂

Welcome Hawk!

If the saddle is plastic, consider replacing it with bone. It’s improved the sound on most every guitar of mine that came with plastic saddles. It’s now SOP with every old guitar I latch on to.

Congratulations on acquiring such a nice guitar! Duet is the name Baggs is using to market their newest twin SBT system. And Duet was the name Apogee chose for their audio interface line. I am unfamiliar with an onboard preamp from Baggs named Duet, but I am intrigued. I performed for years with the Baggs Dual Source pickups in my Guilds. These pickups include an Under Saddle Transducer (Element) and a miniature condenser mic mounted in foam and attached inside the guitar. This system required a stereo splitter cable to control the mic and the piezo pickup independently. Great sounding system, though it was a bit prone tpo feedback. I speculate that you have an onboard preamp version of the Baggs dual source, where you can flip a switch to either isolate the piezo or enable the mic and blend it in with the piezo, and send the unified signal out to an amp or PA via a mono cable. Unless you are intending to perform in large, high volume venues with no soundman, you could be quite happy with that pickup system.

If you do not have it, already, here is some documentation on the Duet II, which looks very similar to your Duet.

Hawk, Nice acquisition. As someone mentioned, this is the renamed G37. The G 37 had mahogany neck in the early 70's, then switched to maple. Around 1996 they switched the name to D30...I tried to buy a 1980 G37 recently, but the seller backed out 9of the price he set)...I am also new to the forum, but have learned a lot as all are eager to help with questions and, as pointed out, enable you to buy more Guilds...I have picked up two recently and nothing but positive feedback and encouragement along the way...Dave

My 1981 G37 has a maple neck.

Regarding brass bridge pins...If there's one thing this model does not need it is more resonance and sustain. Almost too much lol.

Congrats on getting a great guitar.
