The problem with bean bags is that they don't elevate the headstock of the guitar enough, although I suppose you could put something under the bean bag. This is even more of a concern with slot heads.

With motivation and basic sewing skills I suspect that could be dealt with but probably not worth the effort...

I'm another one who has been using my lap for years, and still do. Effective and cheap!

Luckily, I still have a lap...

For routine string changes, cleaning and minor maintenance, I use a thick bath towel on the kitchen table and a Planet Waves Guitar Headstand. The neckrest folds to fit easily in my guitar toolkit. For work that requires more force or movement, a sandbag wrapped with a hand towel gives steadier neck support.

Very cool, guys.

I'm ordering some strings to get going on some changes now using my Hercules stand (thanks, Sandy!).

Al, now really.... :)

Well, 8 12-string sets are on their way from Strings & Beyond.

Time for some TLC for the herd when they come in and time to use my new neck stand (non-guillotine model). :)

I seem to remember something like this now that I think about it.
And you are almost spot on!
I have pictures of my Orpheum 12 string prototoype in the NH factory resting on the "Protektor #14 Bunny Ear Rear Bag". (Bunny Ear, not the Rabbit Ear one).
Exactly this type with the logo:

That matches my memory quite well. Thank you.
