They already made guitars since 1954 but by 1967 Kawai purchased the Teisco company! Also Kawai began producing guitars under the Kay brand name, when Kay of Chicago ceased manufacturing and imported all of its product.I didn't know they made guitars. And, slothead electrics do indeed sound like a questionable choice.

There is a massive amount of Kawai catalogs and they sold for instance at Sears.
Even stranger is the tuner design of those late 70's models! They are regular Grover tuners, not tuners for slotheads!
