I think so too. Nito is one of the new generation of wunderkind players that play in this style.
Tim Henson of Polyphia is probably the best known.
There's also a German guy named Manuel Gardner Fernandez who plays like this.
To me it's such a mish mash of so many adeptly played techniques: hitting the strings, fretboard tapping, hybrid picking, thumb popping, etc. The music is also often highly melodic and a complete departure from standard blues-based rock.
It doesn't quite do it for me, but I can see how a lot of technically oriented players would like it. It's cool that they're moving guitar playing forward. Eddie, Jimi, Steve Vai, and Joe Satriani did the same thing by using uncommon playing techniques and finger pyrotechnics when they burst onto the music scene.
