This is what I am GASing for:
http://toronto.en.craigslist.ca/tor/msg/1278948771.html
I will assume that 1987 was a fine year for the JF30-12 but in general, how rare is the sunburst for all other years? Is resale value that much more, or is this guy just asking too much?
$1800 CDN seems a bit high, but I am willing to negotiate a trade for one of my 6 strings, should he be willing, hopfully not one of my Guilds.

Not so rare other than there were less sunbursts made than natural tops. That one does look nice, but the price is pretty steep. I hope a trade works for both of you :D

I just aquired a JF30-12 SB at the Philly Guitar Show. It was offered at $1275 but I traded another guitar and cash. The same dealer had a JF30-12 that was blonde but I liked this one better. I'm a sucker for a nice burst. They're great guitars if you can deal with the big necks.

Much more reasonable.

Yup, but even that is probably a little bit on the high side... not for what it's worth, mind you, but for what they normally go for

I just bought a s/h JF30-12 (see my thread) and I LOVE big necks - probably because I have big hands.

Just need to get the action and bridge sorted.

I'm going to check it out tonight. I'm bringing my Takamine TAN16C for collateral. He seems intersted. They typically sell anywhere from 800-1200USD used. I hate to part with it, but we'll see how inspired we both get. Good thing I picked up that DCE-3 for gigs, I was planning on making the switch anyways. I seem to be able to get a better tone with the DCE-3 for the type of playing that I do . Even nicer than the DCE-5, plugged in. The TAK has the 'Cooltube' pre amp - nice for fingerpicking, even flatpicking (probably the nicest acoustic pickup/preamp I have heard for that application), but it sounds harsh when strummed even moderately (although I usually play hard), probably due to the tube's compression effect.

Go get 'em Bobby, you should be very pleased with the JF providing the action is good.

PS Don't drool on the fretboard, it puts him in a better bargaining position.

I gave $1100.00 for my JF30-12 SB last year, then put another 250 in it. Worth it? Absolutely...

Wow what a beauty. Nice low action, plays like butter with that sweet deep tone.
The lowest he will take is $1500. He did offer to take my TAK and $300 (Hmmm). I will decide when I get back from vacation up north. As Jeff Lynne once sang, "I can't get it outta my head".

He said that he is priced high because it was the 45th one of the first run (SN JF300045) in 1987. Is this justified?

1500 Canadian is almost 1400 US. I think that's still pretty high, and I seriously doubt anyone else would pay that unless somebody was specifically looking for a first year JF30-12 and was willing to overpay. I'm not sure what your Tak is worth, etc., but the JF30-12 is just a monstrous sounding 12.

Good luck!

It's tough for us with the fluctuating market. You can buy at a price that seems good to you at the time and want to sell and find the dollar down.

1500 CAD today is approx 1400 USD but in a week could be 1000 USD. Apples vs PCs

Hi Bobby and welcome; hard to know exactly what's 'justified' ... can only be measured v. the market which - for good or bad - is pretty much at-risk eBay auctions for similar goods. I personally don't think its position in a production run means much of anything.

I really have nothing to offer except to say that, for example, if the 'real' worth/value of the guitar is, say, $1,250 and you give $1,500 for it and three years from now you go to sell it but you can't get more than $1,250 for it - it will have cost you $80-odd dollars a year ... or about $6.75 a month to own it. Assume the seller was was willing to lease it to you, do you think they'd only charge you $7/month?

I understand that you'd like to pay less, or no worse, than the market rate ... in one case, getting paid to own it (selling it for more than you paid) or, in the other, effectively owning it for free (getting all your money out) but if you wouldn't be willing to pay $7/mo net to own it, then buy something else.

Good luck with your decision. J

This is very loosely related to this thread... check out the photos, serial number, etc. & draw your own conclusions!

One thing in common between this ad & the seller first mentioned in this thread is they're both placing CRAZY    amounts of assumed value on these being first edit runs.

Bobby.

Hey Bobby I don't think justification for a price lies on the first one built nor the last one built, that's just a buyers thing.

If you're happy with the sale that's all that matters.

I bought my first Guild for $800 US when the dollar was low and it cost me $1150 CAD. I could sell it for $800 US today and it would be $867 CAD. But I don't want to sell it today.

On this site, until the deal is done, talk in USD, or INR (Rupees).
