I just found this in a 2nd hand shop in New Zealand. Didn’t know much about it but figured it had to be worth more than the price tag.
It had $800 New Zealand dollars on it (about $475 US, but that had been crossed out and marked down to $300 NZD ($177 USD), nervous wait til shop owner showed back up and I asked if $300 was right, he said no way! Said he’d take no less than $400 NZD ($237.19 USD) so, I said, - “I’ll take it!”
Got a few surface cracks but it sounds pretty darn good. I have a martin D28 and thought it sounded pretty close, put new strings on it and it’s definitely, to my limited ear, very similar, I’d still choose the Martin… I think..?
Has original case and even still has the key taped to the side of it. Needs a little work but I’m quite pleased with the find :)

Thanks all. And yeah, it did feel a bit like a theft now you say it :) Although I didn’t know what it was worth, just figured it was more than the asking price.

My daily driver is a Guild D-35 from 1974. I keep coming back to it the most even though I have a DV-52 that’s technically “better”.

Considering the astronomical prices of vintage Martins, what a steal!

Welcome guildnz! Wow, quite an entry.
That guitar looks like it came out of a time capsule. Yeah, that is a fantastic deal!

Welcome! That's a really great workhorse dread. Congrats. I love my one. They normally go for $700-$1000 in the US so you got an an awesome deal. I see quite a few touring pros using D35s. Probably because they sound good, are durable, and not super expensive. A member of Lorde's band, Ray Suen, plays one from time to time. See the link below.

Ah, Lorde, another rare New Zealand find :) Thanks for the welcome all, spent a fair few hours strumming away yesterday, it is a great sounding guitar.

I think she's a great songwriter. There seem to be Guild fans in her band. Apart from the D35, I've seen people in her band playing a D55 and her bass player plays a current model Starfire bass.

Your D 35 is not trying to be a Martin. It is a better balanced guitar. I'm liking mine more eight years on. No I won't be selling my Martin, but Guild has a sound that is not immediately captivating. Time will be your friend.
