yeah mine probably falls in the "garage queen" category- not perfect but pretty darn nice for a guitar that's almost 60 years old

Yep, that's considerably cleaner than any of mine. Maybe look for a Hoboken one that's a little more of a "player"?

That's funny Chaz. My '59 looks like a "garage queen" by comparison!

"Cujo" then??? (in reference to the corgis). :D

That works Chaz, and the '59 looks even better with the WB sticker on it. I was going to take it off, but left it on as a bit of an homage to Walter.

Gotta admit that my mug does detract from it a bit.

you are probably right- I must admit I am definitely very drawn to Guilds with P90's...
As am I, and in the context of price and value, I kinda consider myself lucky I'm drawn to guitars I can kind of afford - I like Gibsons with P90's a lot too, but last time I checked what the going rate is on a full-body ES-350, or even an ES175 with P90's....yikes!!!

What do you guys generally feel about the Corona years? Did quality decline markedly after Westerly?

Nah, everyone has their good and bad days. Corona was thrown to the wolves and did a decent job under the circumstances.

Good luck with the search (and FWIW, I'd go the "Walter route")

It isn't that I consider my 1953 X150 not "made to be played"- in fact I play the thing so often at home I think my wife is going to kill me!
It is just I'd feel horrible if it were mishandled or stolen at a gig because it was hard to find and there just aren't that many of them. I mean in '53 Guild only made ~500 guitars total so how easy would it be to find another one?

It is not like I let my guitars out of my sight at a gig but with a big band we sometimes play in cramped quarters outdoors with music stands and I have had close calls where someone's stand topples and almost smacks the guitar. I'd feel terrible if a stand went down and put a huge scratch in any 50's guitar or heaven forbid cracked the top.

Hence the quality question on later Guilds- I thought that with something a little newer/ easier to find I might not feel so badly about gigging with it just in case something were to happen. Maybe I am too paranoid and just need to go for it and live with my decision. In fact I bought a Squier cv50 tele specifically to gig with but as I am used to higher end instruments I am having a tough time even getting a sound I want at all, despite the TI flat 11's (yes flatwounds on a tele!).

At the end of the day, it's just a guitar. I think it's sad that you deny yourself the enjoyment of your Guild. Lotsa folks still play flatwounds on their Tele's (Strats and LP's too!)

If I had a 50's Les Paul, I wouldn't gig it - I'd sell it in a hurry, buy a couple of cool reissues, and have some fun with the rest of the money!

There's a fellow who frequents the local Blues Jam with his 1960 Sunburst Standard. He got it new when he was a kid.

It doesn't get much simpler than that. With that said, I don't have any NY or 'boken Guilds, but my three Westerly Guilds range from 1984 to 2000, and while they are all very different they are all great guitars. My 2003 Bluesbird from Corona is just as good IMHO. I would still love an M-75 with original DeArmonds, but my 2003 is a pretty hot guitar in its own right. You can't go wrong with any era of Guild guitar, but in the end it's just a guitar. Find what you like, play it hard, play it often, and never be afraid of your guitars accumulating a little mojo. When all is said and done I know I don't want to look back on my years and say that I had some damned good Guilds, but I have no idea what it was like to get up on stage with any of them and just play the frets off of them. Instead, I just played them in my office at a volume of 2 and then hung them on the wall for all to admire. Now THAT would be a shame!

Well said - I've only had my IV a few months. I play out with it every chance I get. I dropped in a set of Duncan Pearly Gates and cannot put it down. Gorgeous tone at any volume and I feel very privileged to jam with it . Any want for a 335 has completely vaporized - I love this guitar.

Well in the end I went with a Hoboken made 1961 X-175 for my gigging guitar- see NGD thread I just opened.

Understand everyone's comments about "made to be played" and I can assure you that my '53 gets played at least 2 or 3 hours a day but I personally will be more comfortable gigging outdoors with the '61- just me though.

Well, gee, nothing objectionable about that, die Bullen! You kept it in the Guild realm, and that's all a winner as far as we're concerned!

For the record, we don't really know what the NY- and Hoboken-era luthiers thought about their Guild products. The "Made to be Played" tagline was invented in Westerly timeframe. Who knows, maybe those early guys wouldn't've agreed... (but I think they would've)! :)

Oh yeah! Play them often - I agree with the sentiment of "it's just a guitar", and that they should be played. When I got my D64 I had no idea it was sort of "rare", I just loved how it sounded, and I still do. I'm glad I had no idea, because it might have made me worry more about it instead of playing it daily for almost 30 years.

I only have one acoustic and one electric, I have no choice but to play them!

That is the perfect scenario.

I must respectfully disagree. The perfect scenario to me would be to have unlimited funds and space in my home to buy any and all Guilds that I have previously, or will in the future GAS after.

Even I don't think it's the perfect scenario! But it's worked for me for several years. If I ever get the funds, I would certainly be willing to buy more, but there's always something else that requires funding first... I'm happy I have what I have!

Man, I LOVE hearing a well-adjusted, contented point of view like that. I have to admit, I feel the same way now, but sometimes I let things get way out of balance.
