Actually if you haven’t already, just hit up Craigslist in your area and simply search acoustic in musical instruments for sale, and you’ll find some beaters to sort through, maybe even a diamond in the rough. Good luck in the hunt.

Lotta love for Seagulls in these parts, also for the other Godin models (Art & Lutherie, Simon & Patrick). I admit to being tempted, especially by the slightly wider Seagull neck. My aged fingers get clumsy at times.

Are there other Canuck brands, Ross? To be honest, I've never played Godin or S&P. Are they made in Canada or Asia?

Godin, Seagull, Simon & Patrick and Norman are all brands of LaSiDo, and all made in Canada. Larrivee used to be made in Canada, but I think they have a California factory now. Linda Manzer is the only other Canadian luthier I can think of.

As Rocky said, Jean Larrivee has moved operations to the US. All of the LaSiDo brands are made in Canada. The Boucher family, once part of this company, have split off and are making Boucher-branded guitars.
There are several Craft luthiers; several of them apprenticed under Larrivee. Linda Manzer has the highest profile. William "Grit"Laskin is another. David Wren also comes to mind, but I don't know whether he's still making guitars; he also has/had an interest in the Twelfth Fret, a well-known shop in Toronto. Mackenzie & Marr are a craft duo - a friend has one of their acoustics. I'm sure that there are others.

Godins are usually quite good and reasonably priced. My local stores don't have them, but you can get a decent one with good electronics cheaply. If I see one I'll go play it.

Godins are generally priced well and they usually come with good electronics too. They also don't hold their value so when used ones show up near me (which is rare) they are usually a small fraction the original price.

Godin and family guitars are generally made in Canada and/or the US, one guitar can be partly both. Makes getting things across the border easier, I think.

Lots of decent cheap Yamaha's out here on CL and FBMP. Good beaters.

Go buy a well loved D 25 and be happy. I take my 70 D 35 and love every minute of playing it. Find a built like a tank 80s or 90s D 25 and be happy.
Wish I could get onboard with this but I’ve never played a vintage D25 that was playable enough for me to like it. I really wanted one too. I guess I got discouraged after a few lemons. Never found the love connection. That’s why I got the modern D20. Mine is very playable and sweet sounding. I think the list price for those is too high but I got a good deal on mine. That said, it’s a little too fragile to be a “beater.”

I have a Godin Metropolis. It has mahogany back and sides and cedar top, with an LR Baggs Anthem pickup. I did not know the parent company was called LaSiDo, but they have a lot of companies-as outlined above-with many price points... Last time Gibson was going through bankruptcy, Godin almost purchased them... Everyone who has ever played mine has loved it...It is a great sounding and playing guitar. Just smooth...Would not consider it a beater though...There is a used Seagul S6 at a local shop I may pick up for my daughter...

All that being said, looks like there are plenty of less expensive guitars, that sound and play great, for traveling, campfires, etc...

Dave

p.s. teaser: NGD coming soon..

Not sure where the OP is located but here’s a good deal on a D240E. Kinda like the matte finish on that.

The Recording Kings I've played were fun but I play with my eyes to some extent. The flat black painted guitars just don't do it for me.

My ultimate beater is my MIJ Madeira A-20. Hog/Spruce, their version of the D-40. I was on a quest one day to buy an expensive guitar and hit five stores on my way to and from job sites one day from Rochester, Canadaguia to Syracuse. Nothing blew me away until I ended up at a GC where I found it for $69.

Survived a winter in an unheated cabin in the Adirondacks too!

Looks like that sold, at least it says it isn't available anymore. Guess it was a good deal for someone.
