I am looking for information on a guild guitar. I came into possession of it when my cousin passed away. I have looked around d through Google but I can't seem to find the model of this guitar. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The guitar has sustained some cosmetic damage and I was curious is it better to leave as is or is there a way to restore it? I never took the time to learn how to play so for now it's just a sentimental piece until I can learn.

Thank you! 20230829_181632.jpg20230829_181611.jpg

Rvacc88, well you've come to the right place.

1) The model of your guitar is D-40. The "NT" suffix on the label means "natural top" which means it is not a sunburst but rather a clear lacquer used on the Sitka spruce top that is on this guitar.

2) I'm looking up the year of manufacture for you now...

In answer to your other question, I would not touch the cosmetic damage until after any structural damage and/or adjustments have been made to the guitar. If your cousin's guitar has sentimental value, I would bring the guitar to a luthier and have it looked at thoroughly, and you need to figure out how to store it so it's humidified properly.

If you're planning to sell, you should probably do the same thing I just described with the luthier and then put it up for sale. We'd have to see lots of pictures to help you price it, if you like. But, a well cared-for D-40 from this era should be worth $1K - $1.5K.

If you have options, I recommend looking for someone with a good reputation in your area -- most luthiers have an online presence, and there are usually user reviews.

(Rather than taking it to a Guitar Center or one of those sorts of places, say.)

It will be a wonderful guitar to learn on once it’s had proper set up, necessary repairs (if any) and a new set of strings, Where are you located? One of us might be able to recommend a luthier for you.

You might want to start a separate thread asking for luthier recommendations in the Dallas Ft Worth area. Just give a little background on your guitar.

Welcome RVacc88! That is a really nice guitar your cousin left you.

We can help identify any obvious read flags that might warrant a closer look. If you can post pictures of say the top where the neck joins the sound hole, a side view of the height of the base string at the 12th fret (double dots), an angled view of where the strings come up over the saddle (white) and bridge (wood) those will help. We can then also advise you on a few simple measurements or inspections you can make if needed.

If your cousin was an active player it could be that it is still in fine playing shape with only minor teaks needed. It it has sat for years it may (or may not) need a little more TLC.
