I know this is no big deal for you mountain folks in the boonies, but we just had a 19 hour power outage, the longest in twenty years. Good books, a gas stove, reasonably warm weather, and most importantly, acoustic guitars got me through. There will be fence repair in my future.

We have an antique coffee grinder that was my wife's grandmother's. Used it for the first time. Worked very well.

To me that's a decent "stay-cation."

Hurricane Irene put us out of power for a late summer week, and I mostly enjoyed that.

Superstorm Sandy not so much, because it was freezing and therefore 0% fun.

I had the same experience when Portland had outages a few weeks ago. No electricity required :)

You can get a pretty good 6KW generator for around 5 hundred bucks these days, especially in the off season. Be prepared.

Same for me. One week without power for both of those events, plus we couldn't go anywhere because all the roads were closed due to downed trees. I think it took 5 days just clear the trees.

Bought an emergency generator twenty or more years ago after two bad winters in a row. Since then, we’ve only had relatively minor outages & I’ve yet to even put oil in it! But it sits there in the basement, waiting for the day. Good to know it’s there.
