As someone more familiar with guitars that have holes in them, I didn’t expect to be so thrilled with my new Matamp GT20, and what it means for my recently refurbished 1977 M80…so expressive, the guitar has a massive voice and a wonderful slippery ebony fingerboard.
For those not familiar with Matamp, think Peter Green ‘Albatross’. Matamp made in Huddersfield, Yorkshire, had a split and the offshoot became Orange amps which are much more famous. Matamp still make amps by hand, immaculate engineering, terrifyingly accurate. M80 shines!
I’ve rewired it, 2 new knobs, bit of fretwork, and presto it’s a magic guitar full of tone!

Black on black … the ebony fingerboard is amazing! The other thing that is remarkable is how dynamic the phase switch in the M80 is… like the Nightbird that followed it in the ‘80’s. HB1’s just sing in a Rock guitar!
I agree 100%on the phase switch . Combined with the master volume it’s so useful . I like the toggle in the middle (both pickups) with the phase in the down position .
