What years did the first version of the M-80s get maple tops? I see some (like the one just posted in the eBay/craigslist/gbase section) with what appears to be a mahogany top but others (like my 1979 M-80) have a maple top. Did they switch at a point in time from mahogany to maple or were both available at the same time? Did Guild do the same thing for the solid M-75s from the 1970s? Thanks

The 1975 catalog shows "all mahogany body" for the M-80CS, same for the M-75CS:

Grot had posted all 3 versions of the M-80 over time: 1977, 1981 and 1982.

The Sept 1977 price lists doesn't mention top wood:

Starting with the Sept 1978 pricelist a "maple top" was shown:

So it sounds like the original shape got a maple cap top during 1978.

The March 1981 pricelist shows the new design (middle in Grot's picture):

Since the Sep 1978 pricelist already shows maple top, that is a maple top on your 1979 one.

I always forget to check the pricelist by year. Thanks for the reminder! As you note above, the maple cap first appeared in the 1978 price list and was also noted in the 1979 and 1980 price list before the redesigned M-80 in the 1981 price list. I also see that the M-75 was removed from the price list the same time the maple top was listed for the M-80. Based on the price list data I would guess that the M-75 was never built with a maple top but you never know with Guild. Anybody have or seen a 1970’s M-75 with a maple top?
