Hi

I have just bought a second hand M-120 and have put a set of Medium string on .( 13-56 )
A guitar player friend thinks that is to heavy in standard tuning?
Advice please guys

I got medium gauge strings on my F30R, which is one size up from yours. I bet the M120s or the "20" body size, is best suited for Light gauge strings, but really, it all depends on the neck joint and how solid you think it is. I know my F30 can handle it, it is so solidly built, but I am not sure I would do mediums on an F20 body shape. And if I do, I would cut the tension back a 1/2 step. Which would make it like light gauge tension, but still the big feel and volume of mediums. You can capo the first fret when playing with others.

Collectively, I don't think we have enough experience with the the recent Westerly series guitars to advise you on whether it's "safe" to do standard tuning with a medium (.013-.056) set. What I'd do if I were you is exactly what Woody suggested. Tune it a half step down and capo. That way you can also see if you need to make any adjustments in the nut/bridge with the medium set.

OTOH, since you bought it second-hand and warrantee compliance really isn't an issue for you, you could certainly try tuning to pitch and take the risk.
