My wife and I were lucky enough to see Snarky Puppy live last night. An amazing showcase of talent and performers dedicated to mastering their craft.
I was particularly impressed by the bass work, but each member is as accomplished as the next. Wonderfully complicated material, couldn't be played tighter, but retaining soul and a great groove.
I think I can best describe the show with the way my wife reacted. She has a wonderfully open mind about music, but jazz isn't her thing. Instrumental music isn't her thing. Her favorite band in the world is Aerosmith and she had no idea what a Snarky Puppy was.
About 2/3 through the show, after a dynamic piece written by the violinist, I saw my wife in tears. "That was emotional!" She said.
So within the crazy time signatures, complex changes and harmonies, and blazing runs, there is beauty, soul and emotion.
