First time poster, long time LTG follower. I’ve been Guild shopping, played a few dozen before bringing one home. I chose this one, and it wasn’t a difficult decision. It’s an absolute cannon! I was looking for a D Size guitar, and even played an F-50R that almost won me over, kept coming back to this one.

It’s very “lively”. Almost like this much sound can’t possibly be coming out of this guitar.

I don’t know much about Guild models and history, I’ve always been intrigued by the brand and wanted one. I have played Martins exclusively for the last 25 years.

Thoughts on this size/model?

Looking forward to getting to know everyone!

Welcome! What a first post! Oh man. That F47 looks gorgeous. Congrats! I love Guild acoustics from this period. I have the 12-string version of your guitar, a 1970 model F212 and it's fantastic.

Welcome to LTG and congrats on the F-47! That one has the early body shape which, IMHO, is magical. Enjoy!

Northeast Texas here Gulfcoaster. Welcome. Your hat reminds me of Toy Caldwell's. When you find a good Guild, they are keepers for sure. Congratulation on your new acquisition. Austin ha? Ever been to Hippie Hollow? 😊

Greatest Southern Rock guitar performance of all time by Toy Caldwell by the way. Charlie Daniels on the fiddle.

Score! and Welcome. Stick around and you can plan on playing (and even acquiring) more Guilds. Once you pick ‘em up, they are surely hard to put down. Ohh, all that sound!

Welcome to LTG GulfCoaster and that IS a beautiful F-47 you've got there. Is a fantastic size, in the middle range and has good acoustic qualities very well balanced. I hope you make lots of great music with your first Guild.

Welcome GulfCoaster! Great question. :D

F47 was introduced as the "Bluegrass F47" in '63 (Martin players take note, there's a bunch of new Guilds in town).

Some guy named McCartney with an F47:

It replaced Guild's first 16" lower bout F-body model, the F40, which was defined by its arched maple back and sides. F47 was a flat-back 'hog body version of that outline, variously known as "Grand Auditorium" or "Grand Orchestra" and "Traditional", for that outline specifically, in late '80's-early '90's.

It did evolve into a slightly more rounded form ca '73 when the F40 was revived:

Sometimes called the "Mini-jumbo" shape.

I have an F65ce, maple archback cutaway electric with that outline, but only 3-1/2" deep. It's my go-to for playing comfort and that's a common comment about that body even at standard depths. The narrow waist makes it sit lower, easier on the shoulders. And it puts out damn near as much sound as my '96 D25.

So I love the "family" based on that outline. Guild actually built more combinations of scale length, nut width, and body woods and back configurations with it than any other platform in the (flattop) line-up. I like to say "Read between those lines". It also means you can visualize virtually any combination of specs for that outline and find a factory version of it. (One exception: I've never seen a 1-11/16 nut on the 24-3/4"/24-fret neck that was introduced on the '84 F47ce:)

The "Fxx"'series was replaced with the Traditional series in '87:

That's where things started getting juicy with body wood variations.
And finally a new family of "Fxxce" models in '92:

And finally, the F47 was revived in '98:

I could go on, but you get the idea. :D ( Further catalogs and price lists available at a site hosted by the same guy who runs this place:

"The F40 body" was in the line continuously from introduction ('54) until close of New Hartford in '14. 60 years. Only 17" jumbos (F50's) can make that same claim, dreadnoughts being a close second being introduced in '63 and only now at 60 years.

For some reason Cordoba Music Group, who acquired Guild in 2014, haven't seen fit to continue the platform. It vexes many of us greatly. Indeed, they even put the sacred F40 name on a 17" jumbo all while acknowledging it was based on the original F48..but a corpse plant by any other name would still stink as foul........:devilish::ROFLMAO:

If you like please upvote.
Oops, sorry, my AI bot's gettin' uppity again.

Awesome info! Thanks.

i played it next to the F-50R and several 12 strings in the shop, and I thought that the F-47 was “smaller” than it was, until I brought it home. It’s a perfect “in between” size, and it’s super balanced. Not too big, not too small. someone Also put a Baggs element in it, and it sounds great.

My "unicorn" 's an F47Rce with that 24-3/4" neck, but I've only ever seen the shortscales (the '92 series, until late '94) with a 1-5/8 "nut.

"Vear"
This thread has peaked my interest in a F-47. It seems that there are variations in body depth and bout size. How many changes, if any, were there.
Should I start a new thread?

There weren't that many, Walt. If nothing else, you need a copy of Hans Moust's book (the bible) and you can track the model until 1977. Since then, yeah, not much.

this much sound can’t possibly be coming out of this guitar.
I wanted one of these cause the model sounds like a fighter jet. I've got the wee-est of the mini jumbos, and that is a good description of the guitar once you get past tone, is how in the world can it be so loud? i just posted about the other day, wife left on vacation, I played it outside, springtime weather, it was capable of being loud enough to possibly cause ear damage. What? ;[]

Yes, got to be the sexiest guitar shape on the planet.
Sometimes called the "Mini-jumbo" shape.
Some have slightly flatter shoulders like my '68 F-112.

P1410665.jpg

'71 F-30, slightly rounder shoulders. The baby of the baby Jumbos, it's the quintessential baby Jumbo.

Taken on the night of "The deafening", it looks all quiet and innocent but watch out, it's ready to go out and kick some @ss...

The rounder shape is more pleasing.
