I'm just sitting here doing nothing right now. It is a hundred and three outside. A little later I have to go out to a friend's house to check out some stuff we are doing this weekend at a gig he came up with. I did not grow up playing in bands since I was a teenager. I got into it late in life, and even then, I pretty much held myself to busking local street festivals and doing open mics. But lately I find myself in demand. Why, I ask myself. So not to be too serious about it, as I am not a serious person, I thought on it a little and came up with these thoughts.

1. Own the sound equipment and a truck to haul it around. Just saying, I'm pretty free about letting everyone plug into it. If it becomes community property for a while, I'm not going to get real possessive about it. I don't get attached to that kind of stuff.

2. Be there. I'm just floored by people who don't show up, even for gigs, and expect not to be replaced. If there is anything going on, I'm there. I'm just not otherwise so important or busy that I can't show up.

3. Let the other people make all the decisions and just enjoy the ride. Sometimes there are just too many people trying to run the show. I prefer to set back and go with whatever they decide. Less stress for everyone. I don't care what songs we sing or where we sing them. I just want to go out and play songs.

4. Be a singer. I'm not the best guitar player. I would honestly say that I'm adequate and nothing more. I will get up in front of a microphone though and belt out a song with feeling. I'm not even particularly good at that, but I've found that there are not very many people who will do it. Being a singer is a ticket into the show.

Okay, those are four that of my observations that may or may not be valid observations. Feel free to say what you want or go where you want, it is just for fun. My guitar is packed ready to go and I have a couple hours to kill.

>1. Own the sound equipment and a truck<
I've only played in small acoustic groups (2-3 members) but have adequate sound equipment for that type of situation. Last two cars were bought with room for several guitars and the equipment.
>2. Be there. I'm just floored by people who don't show up, even for gigs<
I just read about a band leader who said if you're not 30 minutes early, you're 15 minutes late.
>3. Let the other people make all the decisions and just enjoy the ride<
Well, I think material should be chosen either as a consensus or by the singer, but am more than willing for most stuff to be out of my hands.
>4. Be a singer. I'm not the best guitar player<
I've mostly been a singer, but am often the main guitar player as well, so at times I just pick. When just playing, always listen to the singer and be careful not to step on their toes.

Hmmm.

I've played in a lot of bands and played a lot of gigs over the years. I can count the times someone didn't show up on 1 finger.

Some bands I led. Some bands I just had to show up and play guitar. Some bands used my PA gear some I just showed up to play guitar.

I have a rule with band drama and that is that if there is band drama I do everything I can to increase it and just have fun watching the fallout. Although thinking about it the last time there was band drama I just stopped that band cold which was sad as we were really good.

I have learned to sing ok but that only took me 40 years.

I love playing in bands. In 2 at this moment. One where we all pick songs and one where I just play what the singer tells me to play.

Love your band drama rule!

I play with 3 friends, and the goal is always just to have fun. We choose songs that we all agree upon, and everyone gets their time in the spotlight.

The only drama occurs when one member allows an outsider to sit in with us when we play out (which is rarely). I hate it, mostly because the person doesn't know how we have rehearsed it, and I am not good at making adjustments. Not their fault, but it is a pet peeve of mine.

I've played in many bands. We had several no-shows over the years so we learned to always have an extra drummer ready.

"So dude, just so we're straight, you're our 5th drummer in 3 weeks. We're hard on drummers, no doubt. But when we do a gig we do it drummer or not. So if you're even 2 minutes late for a sound check, Hymie, Das Maschine, is waiting to jump right into your spot."

Oh, man. Don't know where you are, but it's 60º and raining all day here in central Maine. This has been the rainiest year I've ever seen. Only been to the beach twice! The tomatoes hate it, but the blueberries and greens are lapping it up.

Here's what I bring to a band: original songs, interesting covers, expressive singing and playing, and good audience interaction. I figure, I'm playing to someone, not sitting in my bedroom noodling.

Now you know.

Ah ha !
So there’s still a chance 😎
Let me get back to you about that in about 35 more years !!

And practice!

I find I can sing the note I am playing on guitar so to learn how to sing a song I try to play the melody.

Charlie,
I did a triathlon in Bath, ME, many years ago. Kennebec River, right past the ship works. Had to wear a wet suit, but the wx was nice. Just did the triathlon in Luray, VA, 19 August - pretty close to perfect. It’s 93 in Charlottesville, VA right now.
More than average rain at Squam lake (NH) this year in July, but the water temp was great…. I hope you fix the wx up there soon; will be in VT almost all of Sept & Oct.

I am so bad that I was never asked to be in a band. But people often ask me to jam. Suits me just fine.
This was supposed to be tongue in cheek. Actually it was supposed to be a little humorous but maybe wasn't. I'm with a group of old guys who get together on weekends and jam country and bluegrass music. This summer we keep getting asked to play for fundraisers and festivals. If you happen to be there when someone says, "hey, I got asked if any of us want to play for the thresher and antique tractor festival Sunday after next up in podunk, anybody in." And just like that, you're in a band. Not some prime time rock band, just a bunch of old guys jamming in public.
