Thanks to our own "Los Angeles" I spoke with the owner of the store that had this guitar, and we agreed on a deposit that LA would drop off for me, and then I would pay the balance when my two guitars that are currently on ebay sell, or up to 30 days after the deposit. I called back about 15 minutes ago and was informed that someone came into the store after he and I spoke and put down a deposit, so the guitar is no longer available. He then tried to tell me that he and I never had a deal. What I think doesn't matter since I am on the East coast and Rocker Guitars is in San Fran, but that isn't the kind of place I would ever do business with.

This absolutely sucks. I'm so sorry, Dave.

Rocker Guitars will never see one red cent of my money ever again.

Not that it matters much, I saw a sign that said that they were closing their sales shop to focus on guitar building.

A deal is a deal and this guy broke his word.

His word on the phone should be binding, I just don't know that there is any way I can prove any of it or anything that can be done.

No, no recourse can be found. It's officially his property until cash is exchanged and it's in your hands. But that doesn't make his broken promis anything less than unethical.

Well that sucks! But I guarantee you, there will be another Guild that will appeal to you just as much as this one did or more later down the road. It happens to me frequently

This is why you need to buy on a credit card ( 55 days lee-way ) so that the deal is cut-n-dried.
If you were going to buy it out-right in 30 days anyway you should have just bought it.
There's no sentiment in business . In the world of credit cards , I've been asked to buy it
over the phone , if I wanted it , and that's been fine. Your procedure was commercial mess tbh ..........

You are correct about credit being the logical answer, but your attack on me and "MY" procedure was based on the incorrect assumption that I had not considered credit.

The price for the guitar was a cash-only price. I offered to use credit, but the owner would not accept that without raising the price of the guitar considerably. The owners explanation was that he was intending it to be a local sale, and by his actions it is clear he wanted to promote a feeling of good will toward his business by selling it so cheaply within the community, which he is certainly entitled to do. My only gripe is that he specifically told me that getting him the deposit in cash the next day was acceptable, and that the guitar would be put on hold for me. He clearly did not anticipate the overwhelming interest in the guitar that ensued after he and I spoke.

Perhaps if you had understood the facts your post would have been unnecessary, but everyone is entitled to voice their opinion.

While I am disappointed in the loss of what I thought was a sale, I can't complain too much as I have a new 2012 GSR Starfire VI on order. And yes, ArchtopAnimal, the deposit was made immediately through Paypal because the dealer approved it :p

The guy most probably didn't want to declare anything and just did it as an unreported 'cash' deal..........I'll bet that the guy has had the IRS look at him in the past. Doesn't help you with that guitar but have seen it before ;>) jim in Maine

You could be right, because when we discussed the price he said there would be tax, and typically online sales do not include tax. I mentioned this and he said something about needing to charge me tax to make his financial reporting/bookkeeping easier. I don't know the details of what is involved to a business in selling online versus the traditional store method, but it sounded odd. Oh well, as several people said earlier, you win some and you lose some, and it is all a part of trying to find a good deal.

No offence intended Guildman63 . The only time I had a cash only offer was when some business
wanted to avoid tax ( and he said that was the reason ) and I wasn't bothered . You know , he
could have done it as a private sale through a PayPal trans on his name as a personal ownership deal.
That wouldn't have attracted any attention .... He was obviously very keen to secure someones
cash from somewhere ....... anywhere ! It's only a guitar ; if it had been realestate that you
wanted , then that would be a very annoying outcome.

My apologies for misinterpreting your intent. It is only a guitar, and there are a lot more nice Guilds out there that will tempt me in the future for sure :) I was even tempted this weekend by a 1965 Gibson Barney Kessel guitar, so go figure
