I need a little help folks. I’m really considering bidding on a 1972 D40-12 on ebay and would like to know what a far price for it would be. See Here

This guitar has some obvious issues and shows other signs of neglect. The bridge and saddle look tall enough, but is the neck straight? And how is the neck angle? How is the action? Is there loose bracing? I have doubts about the case being an original Guild case, also. These questions arise out of what I see in the pictures and the seller does not address these concerns at all. I would have to insist on an approval schedule or a better return policy.

Hi Dane: if you haven't had one done, the bridge re-fit will run $100-$150 depending on how easily the bridge plate can be removed. No guess on a fair price or what it might go for. Good luck. J

I'm gonna throw out a figure - $300. For that price, you can afford to have the bridge R&R'd and still end up with a reasonably priced guitar. I'd rather have the bridge pulled up than having the top warped, the bridge is an easy fix. Just my $.02 worth

I think it's going to go for more than $300... but just how high is anyone's guess.

How much would an early G212 sell for? I can't recall, because I haven't seen that many of them sell. Two D-40 six strings from the early '70s have recently sold on eBay for $580 and $1299. I would expect a 12-string to fetch more than a six string, and a D-40 12 string /G-212 to sell for more than the D25-12s that show up on eBay pretty regularly. Also, there might be some "uniqueness" to this guitar... it's a Guild dread 12-string from '72, which is a couple of years prior to the introduction of the G212 and G312. It doesn't say "special" on the soundhole label... but from my understanding, it wouldn't be a standard production model at this time (perhaps Hans could shed more light on that).

I don't think it looks to be in too bad of condition. Unless the lifting bridge indicates major structural issues (severe belly and/or split bridge plate inside), fixing the bridge shouldn't be a major expense. The seller says no cracks... but there is an odd linear element in the reflection along the neck in one photo that worries me... perhaps the "truss rod" crack that is seen in some Guild 12 strings? I would inquire about that... could just be an odd reflection. I would also certainly ask all the important questions about the neck and action before committing myself. The saddle looks nice and high, now... but the seller doesn't mention how high the strings are off the frets. I might even ask the seller to look inside with a mirror and report on the bridge plate... but that might be asking too much. Doesn't sound like he/she knows much about the guitar.

Good luck Dane!

I agree with GardMan, and I think $300 would be a steal for this guitar. This axe looks very clean, and unless it's gotten extra special care, I'd say it's got very little wear and tear on it. That said, of course, neglect has its price too, but I'd put this more like $600.

A 1980 G-212 just went up on eBay... first one I have seen in a while. Looks to be in good shape... but a BUGLY PUP and its bass side shoulder has been drilled for a volume (?) knob.

You're right, Dave, about the B'ugly PUP. I have one just like it. That's a Bill Laurence. The unusual part of it is that it's a portable pickup. The "wheels" along one edge of the pickup are grooved, like a pulley, to slide along the soundhole, and the spring steel appendage on the other side is just that - a spring to adjust the tension holding the contraption in. It's meant to be a temporary installation. I use mine in guitars that have no permanent PU. Having it hardwired into the body with a volume knob is .... kinda jury-rigged. That said, mine works pretty well and relays an honest sound to the amp/PA. But I wouldn't leave it in there permanently.

Thanks all for your help and comments. Last night I was really having GAS for this guitar, but today…well…let’s just say you won’t be tripping over me if you want it. I know there is a Guild 12 string in my future; been wanting one for a long time, but this just isn’t the right one for me. Thanks again. :)
