I picked up a set of the Elixir nonoweb custom light 80/20 11 - 52s this morning and put them on my JF30. I'll give them a go, however, my initial thought is that I don't care for them. They don't seem to have the ring or sustain I got with the John Pearse 80/20s.

Maybe they'll wear into something I like but at almost 4x the cost of what I get the JPs for I doubt it.

YMMV, Void where prohibited, Not valid in Quebec, You must be this high to use this ride......

I tried a set once & had the same feeling. Elixirs lacked some complexity & seemed little improvement over the tired JP's.

Same disclaimer as Graham, but I took em off next day.

Although I am a self-admitted advocate for Elixirs, I would never begrudge anyone their own personal favorite.

I wonder what you think of D'Addario's??????

Consensus please?

I like D'Addarios. Catch some good sales on occasion, so I usually have a couple sets of JPs, Elixers and D'Addarios around as sales opportunities arise.. Can't say all guitars will respond to the Elixers as my F212 does, but in that particular case, I was amazed by the performance and on that guitar will replace that set with another like set...

We've had countless threads about strings, as do most guitar forums, and it really is a personal preference for what sound you are trying to achieve, to your ears, with your instrument.

I have use many strings including D'Addario, Blue Steel, Martin, Guild, Elixir, John Pearse and Thomastick.

For me and the sound I like I prefer the JP 80/20 lights.

Guildmark: "to each his own" (try Thomastik Infled strings)
I couldn't agree more. :) And I will continue to keep an open mind.
I've always wanted to try Thomastiks. Thanks for the reminder, nutmegger!
BTW: I bought my first Guild in Connecticut. From a little store in Stamford.

What's gonna give me a nice woody/bass tone, be no bigger than .052, and be a bronze, round wound that holds up well???

Start naming strings that fit that criteria, gang........I'm open to new ideas...

I just took the Elixirs off and put on a set of JP 600L PB lights. I'm less grumpy now.

When I got my Taylor(s) they had factory-installed Elixirs. They were OK. I went to the D'Addario Custom Light PBs (.011 - .052 gauge) and I've been really pleased. I'm not a heavy strummer, and I do like to bend the strings. I use these on the Taylor and the Guild. The Martin has Martin strings on it, but I may go to the D'Addarios on it, too. The Martin is more of a strummer guitar, so I'll have to experiment with it.

I replaced the strings on my F47 recently with a set of D'Addario's, can't remember the series. Someone from the board here sent them to me as a thank you for not posting their picture, I think.

Anyway, real nice strings. Easy to play, very nice full sound, even the wife likes them.

I guess I'm in the minority here. I have always strung my acoustics up with Dean Markley TLT Vintage Bronzes (011-052). They seem to last forever and sound purty to my ears. Hell, I think the set I have on now has been on there for well over a year and they still sound new...all I do is wipe em down after playing for long periods...and they stay in tune like nobody's business. Either I'm biased toward DM or they do something right...even my electrics get DM Blue Steels and those have the same characteristics the VBs do...stay in tune forever and sound great for a good long time. I only really change them if one snaps.
