Effective today any new member must first post a new thread in the New Member Introductions forum before they are allowed to post anywhere else.

I encourage everyone to welcome new members, and if anyone asks a question in that forum without introducing themselves, I also encourage you to remind them to introduce themselves.

If a new member tries to post in a forum other than the New Member Introductions forum they will be presented with this error:

The reasons for this are twofold:

1) Spammers like to join, bump an ancient thread with some almost relevant nonsense, let the thread percolate for a while, then come back months later and replace their nonsense with spam. This happens almost daily and I'm tired of chasing it down.

2) New users often bump old (even ancient) threads with a question that should have had a new thread. We've had new users bump ancient threads and then reply asking long-deceased members questions.

The alternative (and possibly adjacent) solution is to lock all threads that haven't had a reply in x years, but that can complicate things like sticky threads so we're trying this first.

Note that this does not prevent new members from sending PMs. I need to consider options for that.
