Hello, just purchased a previously owned JF-30 from a quaint little guitar store in Fredericksburg, VA. The guitar seems to be in wonderful condition, and I always wanted a Westerly RI Guild, so I took the plunge. To the experts in this group, should I put brand new lights on this guitar. I believe mediums are on it now, but need to be replaced! Any thoughts would be appreciated. sjm

Congratulations, Sgt Pepper. I see this is your first post since joining last spring. It's a great one, but needs some pictures of the new beastie. We typically call that a "NGD" post (new guitar day).

Anyway, again, congrats. And there's no warrantee for you to be concerned about so mediums or lights will not be a factor. As for "best?" Well, I'm going to stay out of that discussion... Cough... John Pearse phosphor bronze ... Cough. ... :D

Thank you... I'll take a few pics when I get home today! Ordered a brand-new case Guild HS case from Sweetwater yesterday!

Great score! If you do a search you will see possibly hundreds of "string choice" threads! As you can tell from the replies already, everyone has a favorite. You will eventually find your own!

What a fine instrument, love the blonde, would like to see the backside too, Guild has some groovy maple in its stash.

I'll take a few more pics this weekend! My partner is coming home after two solid weeks in Moline, IL visiting her mom and I need to introduce her, quite gently to yet another guitar in our household... Wish me luck!

Ha! I know the feeling. I bought a nice 12-string while my wife was away on a trip with our daughter. She's not real enthusiastic about my guitars. When she got back, I didn't even tell her. 🤫😇

Last year my wife was not too thrilled when she asked how many I had, when I replied 16. Of course that started a lengthy conversation about things and stuff and where else that money could have been spent blahblah. In fairness to her she said it wasn’t so much I had many guitars if that’s what makes me happy, it was that I did sneak a majority of them in rather than tell her I was buying them. So that’s my word of advice on the matter.

I did since whittle my collection and tweak it down to 10, and told her I was all set, now have what I want and feel I’m covering all bases, with maybe the exception of a Guild Jumbo 6 string(not sure if I want maple, rosewood or hog), so maybe 3 more lol. So if one day I decide to get one, I’ll tell her my reasoning and that I need a new dose of happy 😃

I always try a few different sets of strings to find what works best for the guitar. Try the lights. You might also like the John Pearse "new medium" strings which have medium E-B-E strings and light A-D-G strings. Best of both worlds for me. If you like phosphor bronze, D'Addario makes a similar set called "true mediums" EJ24.

..and I've been thinking a lot about maple guitars lately :)
