I’ve always been a Strat player, my mid 60s USA STRAT was recently stolen out at a gig. I loved that strat, but I’ve always wanted a semi hollow. Enter the Guild conversation. I don’t really want a Gibson 335 as they’re a little “mainstream” and expensive just like the fender was. Grestch I like, but I do play with a pretty gritty tone and these just seem a little thin to me. Looking at a starfire but really kind of new to anything guild. Any advice or things to look out for? Models to look at? Tips or tricks for locating? Could use a new acoustic too if anyone has any recommendations.. My only non negotiable is USA made. I’ve had horrible luck in my life with overseas guitars except one very special early 80s Japanese Strat.
Oh also… I don’t mind if the guitar is visually beat to shit as long as everything plays right. I can work on aesthetics later if I decide to do so
Oh man! That sucks to hear that about your Strat. That's not easy to replace financially or emotionally, I imagine. However, as one door closes, another one opens, eh?
Welcome the wonderful world of Guild! There's a lot to discover, which I think is the funnest part of exploring a new brand.
As P. of D. stated above, if strictly speaking American-made semi-hollow Starfires, you're probably looking at a Starfire IV, V, or VI, which vary in appointments and features. These have been made since the mid-60s at different factories in Hoboken NJ, Westerly RI, and Corona, CA. All eras have their fans, and unlike Gibson, consistent quality instruments were made during each period.
They had varying available finishes, neck profiles, pickups, electronics, and construction, so you definitely want to do some initial research to find which will best match your tastes. It seems to me that nice examples from each era are consistently available and can be had at much more affordable prices in the vintage market than other brands.
First, I would suggest reading up a bit on a few Starfire IVs and Vs on
GADs website (LTG forum master and overlord) where he goes into detail about common differences. It will also give you an idea of the breadth of models in the Guild range over the years. You can also always ask us for clarifications or specifics if you spot a potential purchase that piques your interest!
