I know some of you will remember this guitar from its eBay listing. It’s months ago now that I won the auction and I haven’t posted about it since because when I finally received it (after an odyssey of needlessly crisscrossing the country multiple times thanks to bad carrier instructions), it went right back out for service. Finding someone to work on it took some calls ... Evan Gluck at NY Guitar Repair doesn't do neck resets, Brooklyn Lutherie told me as a rule they do not do resets on Guilds, and Paul Nieto of Guitartech was too backed up. However Matt Brewster, founder of the legendary 30th Street Guitars, told me he is now shopping out all neck resets and other more complicated restorations to a guy named Urban Eisen-Miller because he is skilled and charges a fair price, so I was game.
Urban grew up in NY state and, I was told by Matt at 30th, worked for Collings for years before moving back to NY and going into business for himself. He's a fairly busy guy because he also takes work from a bunch of other stores including Southside Guitars, Rivington Guitars, and Chelsea Guitars in NYC, and then Collar City and Love of Fuzz nearer where he lives. But after a month and change of waiting I just picked the guitar up today and having spent a little time with it I can give him a warm reference. He definitely charged me what the job was worth, but I was expecting to pay at least 1K to get this guitar going and he gave me money's worth in a lovely reset, a beautiful refret, trueing the fingerboard, stabilizing a crack on the top, and removing an Anthem pickup system that was installed (I asked him to leave the endpin hole so I could install a NoJak). If anyone in the area needs someone to do similar work, you should definitely hit Urban up. You should be able to get him a guitar through any of the above shops, or you can email him at urbaneisenmiller@gmail.com .
See pics below ... he followed my request not to do any overspray or touching up type work, so the finish on this guitar displays all its years of being in the wars. But I still feel it's a very beautiful instrument, and it sounds very pretty too. I was able to sit down at work with a spare minute in one of our studios and noodle around for a few minutes. Here's a link to that audio if you want to hear what the guitar sounds like while you're perusing the pics. My first guitar as a teen was a Yamaha 12-string, but I've never owned a really nice one, so having the F312 feels like a real achievement!
