So, we discussed this a few days ago. This is the one where Shelby (aka stuball) went and picked up the guitar for me and mailed it to me. Thanks Shelby, you're a good guy.

This was one of those split second decisions with little thought, questions or investigation on my part. You seldom see them and since I had never owned one wanted it regardless.

The seller was a Reverb newbie but after lots of gyrations and missteps I got it into my cart. I paid full boat and did not make an offer. I bought it going in blind but I did so knowingly. The seller represented it as very good condition but I think that was generous. I would likely have classified it as good condition. It's seen some battles and wear in its day. There are a couple soundboard cracks and one on the back as well where the neck meets the body. There is binding shrinkage and some binding cracks/splits primarily on the fingerboard. There is also some wear down to the wood on the top of the headstock. The jury is still out whether a neck reset is needed but if it is I'll do it. I love the coral look on this one. I had a DV 73 with similar inlays but this one seems less in your face or pronounced. It seems more subdued and I like it personally.

So, all in all, not a collector piece but beautiful (at least in my eyes) all the same. This will be going down to Tom Jacobs to see what he can do about improved repairs of the cracks noted, likely some wood repair/refinish in spots and perhaps a neck reset. I'm willing to bet it will look like a different guitar when I get it back.

Here's a couple of pics:

That's a beauty, with some mojo. Remember, Guilds are Made to be Played, and it seems this one has been. All those miles just add to a sweeter tone.

Richard that is why you have gained my trust when I buy. You see things not visible to me. I am glad you are satisfied, "all and all" and wishing Tom works his magic and you have a Coral DV72 in very good to excellent condition - your representation.
And how does it sound?

Well, the sound is magical, similar to any DV series guitar I've owned. The Low E is having a struggle staying in tune but I'm pretty sure that's not too much of a concern. It had been sitting for some time and I think the strings need to stay at proper tension for a bit. We'll see. But, now I'm really geeked to see what Tom can do with this one. My guess is that it will look and play like a different guitar.

I will admit I took it from its case and lay both my DV72 (turquoise) and your DV72 (Coral) side by side on carpet. I kept looking at and admiring yours. Gonna say it was the newness that held my attention longer. Ha. Just a stunning guitar!!!

Richard, That’s too bad about the condition issues vs how it was listed. No doubt Tom will work his magic and it will look and play wonderful again. The coral is terrific!

I will say the seller I think was trying to be up front. But, he was new at this and selling for a relative, not a player himself. Cracks never bothered me that much and I believe Tom will work some magic on this one. I got it at a price that allows room for quite a bit of investment as far as repair and cosmetic work goes. If I sell, I may not get all my investment out but I think I'll be close.

And the real kicker is that I had never owned a Coral version before and one of my goals is to have owned and tried nearly every model Guild ever made. (except for a few of the off the wall ones I'm not really interested in). I've made very good progress towards that goal and this one gets me just that much closer.

Love the thick Herringbone Guild did for these. Much wider strip than Martin did.

Here's more of what I believe to be some of the history of this guitar. I tracked down this guitar from a Facebook post several years ago and posted about it on LTG. The owner passed away and a relative took possession. I became friends on Facebook with his daughter. I gave AWAGNER her name and first dibs if she wanted to sell. She was very sentimental with her father's musical instruments. His name was Paul Ducker. He died at the age of 67 on July 2, 2019. The coincidence of the guitar coming from Smyrna and that being her home and the rarity of this model leads me to believe this is the same guitar.

Wow! That tells me, Richard ought to buy $10 worth of lottery tickets - this could be his day. Great story.
I would like to add more to this story. This DV72 (Coral) settled in the hands of Murry Kellum's Widow and his grandson in Smyrna. Murry Kellum's was a song writer (I'm a Long Tall Texan and his other song that I recognize is one he co-wrote-If You're Gonna Play in Texas You Gotta Have a Fiddle in the Band 'Alabama'. Murry died in a single engine plane crash near Gallatin, TN in 1990. I will do a little more research.
Paul Ducker's fiancee was Murry Kellum's Widow and her daughter by Murry wound up with the guitar. The daughter passed away from cancer in 2019, also. Her son, Ty, the grandson of Murray's widow and later fiance of Paul Ducker, is who I met in Nashville TN and picked up the guitar. Very nice young man.

Let us know your impressions of the Merle Travis model.

Does this complete the DV-7x collection?

I think the DV-7X's are just superb rosewood dreads!! I played mine last night and even with ancient strings the thing just sings. Congrats, Richard. That's a rare bird, indeed!! (y)
