Don't know if this really counts as this is obviously a Guild Guitar Forum . . .
So I am fortunate enough to call Mass Street Music one of my local shops and Saturday I trekked over to Lawrence to try out the 1979 D-55. As you can imagine, it was a canon . . . a beauty (IDK if pristine is the best word) but there were no scuffs, scratches, or other physical age markers. The sound was what we all would come to expect. The neck fit my hand like a glove. Unfortunately, the guitar's weight was also what we would come to expect . . . For me, I had managed to forget just how heavy these guitars can get and with my shoulder problems, I knew as cool and sweet sounding as it was, I would not be leaving with the D-55. So . . . (and here's the point of this post), one of the guys in the shop held up and suggested a James Goodall KGC model that was also in the shop on consignment.

Now to my knowledge, I have never played a guitar from a builder considered a boutique builder/shop as they are just beyond my means. That said, this one was on consignment for less than market value and it sounded like one would expect a boutique guitar to sound - suffice to say, I was thunderstruck like Michael Corleone on his trip home . . . I now get the "boutique" allure. And given that it was priced below market, I would have been a fool to walk away. The sound is definitely mid-range, focused, and "tight" - not tight in sort of the guitar seems choked . . . but tight in the kind of focused, laser / dialed in kind of way (not sure if that makes any sense at all). I'm still learning my way around this guitar as it is definitely one that I will grow into.

Some specs:
1-Ceder Top
2-Koa back and sides
3-Top five coolest Headstock shape (not really a spec but apparently something that I really use in my guitar appraisal)
4-Scale is 25.5
5-I don't yet have the neck measurements and string spacing . . . but both were actually the first thing I notices when I sat down and played it in the shop. Lots of room on the string spacing and the neck is a bit flat with very little roundness (C shape?) which just fits my hand wonderfully.

So, even thought I didn't leave with the D-55, the D-55 played a role in bringing me to the James Goodall . . .so even in a non-purchase, the Guild stands out as just coolness.

Right time and right place. Feeling humbled and fortunate in front of the guitar goddess. Thinking the Eastmans may be on the way out as between the Goodall, Guild, and Larrivee in my signature, there is not much sonic room or even purpose for the two Eastmans.

(Sorry about the quality of the photos . . . I am by far one of the worst photographers out there!)

Beautiful guitar congrats! When I lived in Kansas I was in Mass St Music at least once a week. I played a Goodall 12-fret D once and it was thunderous. The overtones were almost too much for my heavy-handed (barbarian) style of playing, but it sounded great with a lighter touch.

Thanks on the congrats - i truly feel lucky and right time/right place fortunate.

Back in the day, I guess Mass Street was a Goodall dealer. The Goodall i brought home was originally bought at Mass Street in 1996 - it’s kind of cool to possess a one owner guitar and know the backstory of how the guitar came back to its original home.

Between Mass Street in Lawrence, KS and Bentley’s in Parkville, MO, I’m pretty lucky to have cool independent shops so close to me.

I’m not sure if the Goodall i have is thunderous. it can be big and loud but also nuanced and patient!

FWIW - there is still a D-55 at Mass Street looking for a new home. it’s on consignment and not on their web site. So one would have to contact Mass Street directly for info.

Nothing wrong with pictures. When pictures make me drool (be right back need a napkin) they are just wonderful to me.
Love the top. Enjoy your new guitar!!

That's a really sweet instrument, CONGRATS!!! And, just to be clear, you're not even close to removing me as top place in the lousy pics deparftment. Not even close.

Gosh, that's beautiful! Goodall may be an individual luthier, but I've seen a bunch of his guitars around the guitar boards before.

That's a really interesting combination -- cedar with Koa. And, very beautiful! Enjoy.

mod-speak: Since you were looking at a Guild, we'll leave it here in the Guild acoustic section. :)

on the mod-speak . . .FWIW i only posted after some self/internal debate as i knew the focus was only peripherally on the original D-55 that brought me to Mass Street. Anyways, thanks for leaving the post and for all you do as a moderator!

As far as the guitar itself, apparently Goodall made very few Cedar / Koa combos. i’ve have cedar and mahogany before but never this combo. i wonder why it’s a rare combo.

Beautiful guitar. I've played a few Goodalls, and all were stellar, but unfortunately also out of my price range. Every once in a while you do get lucky with one under market value. A few years ago, I foolishly sold my wonderful cedar topped Bourgeois J(umbo)OM to a bandmate, and have regretted selling it.

JOMs are Bourgeois' lowest selling line, and cedar tops are even more rare, so finding another has been pretty much impossible. So I started exploring other options, and the most logical avenue was Lowden, who makes a lot of cedar topped guitars. And getting lucky like you, I was able to not only find a O22 substantially under market value, the seller was also looking for a fretless bass. He loved my fretless Pilot, and took it in a partial trade. And I will say that the guitar is fantastic, and totally unique in my collection as well. Lowden uses a "dolphin" bracing scheme that really gives it a unique tone, and it's a super light an resonant build as well.

I am super happy with the new addition!

Since Cedar tops are now on my mind, I did a quick check for Guilds with Cedar tops and apparently they are rare but they do exist. Sounds like I've got a new quest!

Sounds a bit like the mid-range Martin I used to have -- focused, dialed in laser-like tone.... Like it was very refined. I didn't really like the tone, frankly, but of course tone is super subjective! On a different day, I could probably think differently.

Yeah, there are very few outside of classical style models. I have one, a model CO-1 from the contemporary series. It is 000 /OM size with a simple look but surprisingly very nice. There was also a D6 or D4 dreadnaught size that is out there and quite rare.. I believe member Willeypicket has one

Nice - Cedar on a Guild seem to me to be one fine combination.

A similar thing happened to me recently. I was looking to trade some instruments I wasn't playing, and while they were looking them over, I picked up a used Santa Cruz D P/W. It had me in five minutes. Only cost me another $2k. Impervious, I thought, to the small difference for a large expenditure, after forty odd years, one finally got me. No way would I have bought a new one. I had just put down a D 18 Authentic that I didn't care for. One just never knows. If I told you the various brands that didn't inspire me, including most SCGCs, you might think me nuts.
