I’ve been waiting for Guild to offer a Dynasonic verison of the Starfire III ever since its introduction in 2013 and here it is!

GAD did a tremendous review of the standard model, so I will refer you to that for all the details. I will just give the highlights as I see them.

The superstructure of the guitar is the same as the current SF-III (though it has an ebony fingerboard compared to the 2016 version that GAD reviewed). The Dark Emerald finish is reminiscent of the early ‘60s Emerald Green Starfire. The Emerald finish was most commonly applied to maple body Starfires, and this Newark Street version follows suit and has a maple body as well. Cool!

You can see how it compares to the finish on an original 1962 Starfire III below. The finish is so dark, it qualifies as being a fingerprint magnet (polishing cloth not included).

The other neat thing about this model is the vintage look switch tip. No orange plastic here! Now we can only hope that the online Guild store makes these available (unlikely).

Internally, the guitar is pretty clean, though there’s plenty of polishing compound and overspray around. The braces are cut just as on the LB-1 version of the guitar which is a shame given the pickups are surface mounted.

Supposedly this guitar is demo because it has “overspray under the bass side ear of the headstock” and “fine scratches on various parts of the guitar.” I can’t see any of these flaws so I’m surprised and pleased. I was expecting the worst and basically got what I would call a new guitar.

The reason I wanted a Dynasonic version of this model is that I find the LB-1 pickups to sound best (for my purposes) in a semi-hollow guitar (NS Starfire IV, V, VI) or solid body guitar (NS S-200 T-Bird, Jetstar). They lose some snap and bite in a fully hollow body guitar like the NS SF-III or CE-100D. BTW, I don’t have a problem with the mismatched LB-1 neck and bridge pickups. To date, I have always been able to dial them in to my satisfaction.

The Dynasonics do not disappoint and have lot of chime and bite. This is perhaps the first Dynasonic equipped guitar that I did not have to shim the pickups to get the sound I want. It’s dialed in perfectly right out of the box. I compared it to my X-175 Special that is fitted with Dynasonics and the Starfire III Dyna sounds a little brighter and more aggressive. I’m guessing that’s due to the X-175’s big body and laminated spruce top. But that doesn’t mean the X-175 doesn’t sound good. It does and it remains one of my favorite guitars. BTW, this deep body/shallow body pattern is the same with my X-500T and Starfire III P-90. The Starfire is brighter and has more bite compared to the big body X-500.

I don’t know if this will be offered as a special run or if the two Starfire III Dynasonics from Sweetwater are simply proof of concept guitars. I hope it becomes a regular model or, at the very least, a special run. It’s a fantastic guitar and I think a lot of people will like it.

This is great to hear and more proof that Sweetwater demos are among the best of the best. It seems they tend to greatly overstate defects and damage. Congratulations!

Congratulations! That’s super nice looking. With an ebony fretboard, no less.
How are the frets on your SF3? The NS X-175 I had had huge railroad tie frets; even after some work I couldn’t deal with them.
I’m aware this may be a personal preference issue.

How are the frets on your SF3?
They are 0.091" wide and dressed high (about 0.06"), but I like them that way. They look and feel the same as the frets on all my other Newark Street archtops.

I have to say that I think the maple body has a lot to do with the sound of this guitar. Guild could have pressed the easy button and simply put a couple of Dynasonics on the standard mahogany body, but they took it a step further. And I'm digging the new style switch tip, too.

Very nice!

Were the original Emerald-Fire Guilds that dark or did they darken with time?

On Sweetwater

I get that, but I'm curious if this is just a very limited run commissoned by Sweetwater, or if anyone has heard any rumors about them expanding production, or even making it just a Sweetwater only (but not limited to 5 guitars or whatever) model.
