Of course, if your '73 was carved as well, you could say you have a clutch pair.

"Q" Exposed!!!! Cool. I wasn't privy to this thread for lack of permission, but I can now enjoy your mug.
And if my 73 was carved, it wouldn't be a 73 right? See? See?!!! Sometimes I pay attention....

?

Mine is. And stclrob's is a '72. Notice yours is rather dark? Click my signature pic below and check out the colors. The '73 is noticeably lighter. Seems they got a different batch of mahogany or something in '74 and they came out darker even though they have the same finish.

As a matter of fact, I think mine needs to be plugged into the Marshall. The '73, that is. New strings.....

I'll go back to what I'm doing best, not pay attention.

I thought I read somewhere that the carved were made between 74 and 77.... Never mind. :?
(Guess I should have just looked at the Roster closer...) :?

Thanks Chaz!
That thing is pretty cool, I can't stop looking at it.
Next, as per TF's advice, a Deluxe! Never thought I would get a chance of becoming a cool kid pushing 50....

Thanks Mojo, I wouldn't say I went as far as hating it, but I sure would have never considered buying one, and then it grew and grew on me until it became a necessary step in my GAS evolution.... a little bit like a doctor's prescription if you will.
And I do feel much better now.

The chronology here for the JS bass has the nuts and berries available in 1974. That said, they imply that a walnut finish was not available until 1973 which is at odds with my experience purchasing a 1971 serial numbered one in 1972.

Hey Bluespicky,

Real nice score.

I'm holding you and Thunderface responsible for my s-100 lust. I came here looking for info on a guitar I used to have and got schooled on the virtues of this fine instrument. Your Youtube video put me over the top. Love the tone, I'm sure a lot of it was in your talented fingers, but I'm holding out hope that I will get me some of that sound.

I unfortuneately missed out on Thunderfaces '77, but I'm on the hunt.

Enjoy the new find and post another youtube with it when you get a chance.

With the way you can play, I'd have to say you've been cool for a long time! I'm only cool by association and accumulation.

Hi Larry, and thanks, I'm very pleased with my latest catch...
No problem for sharing the blame with TF for your lust, we're team players...
Seriously though, don't back down and stick with "vintage", (BTW don't forget to blame Qvart too  )
It will reward you with all kinds of tone you didn't even know existed!
Keep us in the loop with your hunt and good luck to you!

OK, then Qvart, This is an announcement: Find me one! :p

They seem to be scarce or bug bucks now that I have the cash burning in my pocket. I just missed one last week on Craigs list that was within driving distance.

One question for the experts: Is there really any difference btw the early 70's model to the late 70's models? I know the bridge was moved up, does this effect the sound at all, or just the feel? Also, I think the 1970 version didn't always have the phase switch?

So, ideally, <shhh> I'm a huntin for 1971-1975 vintage, or 1971-1977....

heheh...wabbit season..

You have the best team available on the lookout!

Sound is the same. String tension is slightly tighter after the tailpiece move. Or, rather, the string tension is more like a "normal" guitar. With the tailpiece further back the tension is looser than you might expect on a guitar. The tailpiece moving forward was accompanied by an increase in neck angle. See the S-100 Sticky Thread for links to more threads about all things S-100.

Optional at first. Standard by '72 (I think).

You would do well with any of those. FYI, the tailpiece move happened in '75 (I had one until a couple months ago).

Cool! I know you guys hunt them for sport!

So the post 75 string tension is more a personal preference thing? Thanks for the string tension link.

Larry,

What Qvart said on the string tension of the pre- and post-75 S-100s with the farther/closer tailpieces. The tone is the same, it's just the string tension that's a little different. Matter of personal preference, but only if you happen to have both to make a side-by-side comparison. I think if you got one with the closer tailpiece, you'd still be plenty happy with it.
