New guy question: besides asking questions at this forum, are there any links to Guild nitty gritty as in recognizing production runs, fakes, etc. etc. blah blah. Thanks. I suppose I should snoop around this sight some more and stumble on to answers.

Not sure what you're asking for or why.

This thread will lead you to recent discussions of probable counterfeit guitars.

The Guild Guitar Book has a lot of information that can be used to identify and verify instruments made through 1977. Beesly's book offers some information that can be helpful. I often do a search on make and model and look for images in case there might be a chance to play "one of these things isn't like the others". Published lists of serial numbers have known problems but sometimes finding the serial number in the list can eliminate some concerns. Mostly though, if the goal is to identify fakes or assess originality you are going to learn the most by posting pictures here, asking for opinions and then asking for the why behind those opinions.

Fakes? There have been some glaringly obvious badly done flattop fakes on Ebay, that would stick out as "not Guild!!!!" to anyone but the most guitar-virginal of novices, but I haven't seen any fake Guild archtops.

As far as I know, the Chinese haven't decided to counterfeit Guilds, as they have their hands full turning out fake Les Pauls. ;-)

Best thing to do is ask about a specific make and model. also, be aware that some people make a living buying electrics, stripping the original parts and selling them. Then, they throw a lot of CheapChineseCrap(tm) on the shell and use a lot of "weasel words" in the auction to explain the missing parts.

Any questions about that, post links and we'll be on that like Rosey O'Donnell on the dessert tray at Golden Corral.

Asking because I am old, but new to thinking about, discussing guilds and the nerd stuff relating to them. Haven't owned a "real" guild since about 1974 (SFII 1968 there about) and only recently snagged a dearmond 2001 sf special. On the Hunt for a US Starfire, hence the broad perhaps vague question.

Welcome to the forum... I hope you find a nice Starfire. They'll have to pry mine from my cold dead hands.

Makes sense, there were a lot of variations in Starfires over the years. Probably what you want to ask yourself is which kind you would like, a hollowbody, like your old Starfire or a semi-solid, like your DeA Special. Then you only have about 7 or 8 pup choices to make, lol!

I'll suggest to get the Guild book by Hans Moust - it won't be a great help in resisting the urge to get an old Guild, it'll probably do the opposite, but you'll know everything you always wanted to know about Starfires but were afraid to ask!
