And to get back to Jimbow's original request, I think he's hoping for "some advice" for a smaller-bodied guitar. He has the dreads, and they're mighty good ones, too, even though they're not Guilds.

So....where are we now on that search, Jimbow? Any progress at all to report? :D

Joe
Well, I have played a few nice Martins that's about all you can find where I live other then cheap junk at the local flea markets but such is life in a small KY town, so far I have not settled in on anything as of yet. I most likely will put off the final decision until after Christmas. I have two Martins and I don't see the need for a 3rd so I am interested in the Guilds. I am leaning toward a used Westerly model if I can find one that doesn't take a major bank loan to buy. I am also considering another 12 stringer, too. Right now these are more wishes on a Long List. I will get more serious on the actual search once Merry Christmas is over. I am taking suggestions right now and the more the better.

When I was looking, I found that you better have at least $1200.00 in your hand when you start shopping for a used Guild.
Yes, you will find some that are cheaper but many of them need a neck re set.
A Westerly D-50 or D-55 will cost at least this much or more.

They will also be worth it!

Hey Jim,
Not a Guild, but there's a nice looking Martin 00-18V on Ebay that looks to be just what you are after.

True, but condition has a major effect on the price. If you are after a player rather than a minter (yes, I'd rather have a minter...), you can save quite a few $'s. The other thing is they can be quite difficult to find, look at the trouble I had finding a Hoboken F30 (that might actually be a Westerly !!).

With a little luck and persistance, you can find a Guild dread with just about any tonewood you want for </= $1200... The most I have paid (sans shipping) for any of mine was $1110 ('92 D-55), and my D-25 and G-37 combined cost less than that! So they're out there... none of mine are museum pieces, by any means, but none are in immediate need of a neck set (tho' I am contemplating having my old D-35 reset sooner, rather than later... in the next year or two). So don't give up hope!

I have been looking at, with some interest, the 47 models and at one time I was looking and drooling at Graham's 47rec I think that maybe the model I will try next but, I will stick with the used ones due to the funds availability, but, right now the purchase is out of the picture until after Christmas and most likely until Tax refund time. Hopefully February but, that would be the earliest and it depends on how much we get back. Thanks for all the great advice!!!!!!!!!! BTW I got Dad's old D-28 back from the repair shop yesterday and I couldn't be happier. Kathy Currier, the Martin Repair lady, did a super job and that old Axe just sings, even better then before(hard to fathom this) so if any of you need repair work and can't find a local, PM me and I will check with her to see if she can help you out. She can fix anything on any guitar and you can't tell she ever touched the instrument except for the fact that the problem is GONE!!!!!

Jim,

Not that I'm biased or anything, but you should try an F-50R.

Don't know how well the jumbo will work for you doing fingerstyle. It's not everyone's cup o' tea.

+1 on this. If you are used to the bulk and size of a dread, them there may be a chance that switching to a small guitar may feel weird and hard to get used to. Or I may be wrong...either way the balance you should get from a jumbo should be nice for finger picking and the added volume ain't a bad thing.
