I bought an M85 II recently, in what I took to be a Guild case. This is a rectangular black tolex case with faux alligator vinyl on the ends of the case, along with single white piping. The interior is a medium-dark shade of blue, with a black leather pull on the case pocket. There is an imprint for a missing logo near the right side of the non-original case handle (Samsonite handle; classy!! LOL!). The case dimensions are 46"x16" exterior, 45 1/4"x15 1/2" interior. My M85 sits in the case very tightly and the end of the neck and/or the back of the tuners rest directly on the floor of the case (not good!).

To me, this looks like a late '70's kind of case, but I am frequently wrong about such things. A guy on ebay tried to sell the exact type of case on eBay at the end of May. He thought it was a case for a short scale B-301-type bass, but heck, did they ever even make a short-scale B-301? 302?? I've never seen one!

What do you guys think? Here's a link to the eBay auction:

Here are some iPhone pics of my case, with and without the M85 II:
Empty case

Interior shot of cushions for holding/postioning a bass body in case

Pic by side of handle where some metal logo used to be

Pic with M85 II in case. Oh, can you see the headstock resting against the floor of the case? No bueno!

That's all, Folks!

Well I would have to question whether it's a Guild case at all. I don't believe I've ever seen that handle nor does the oval shape of the missing badge ring a bell. AFAIK, there was never a short scale B-300 series bass.

Yeah you have, just on Samsonite luggage! As stated in the body of my original post, my case has a non original handle:)

Grot, the reason I think it might be a Guild case is because it looks so similar to the cases I find on Google for the 34" scale B-301/2 basses! I didn't think there was ever a short-scale B-301/2, either (that was speculation from the eBay auction that I ran across recently).

I do wonder if there are any short-scale Guild bass in the lated '70's/early '80's time period. The case is too narrow for a Starfire and I don't know what else might have been sold in the late '70's/early '80's that would fit it.

I've never seen padded positioning cushions like that on a Fender or a Rickenbacker case, though I have on Guild basses. Ricky bases are 13" wide and I suspect that would a pretty wide case for one of those instruments.

So, if anybody has any thoughts........???

Oops, missed the handle reference. Now that you mention it, it could be a JS bass case although I'm still a little confused about the oval badge.

Grot, I don't have a JS bass anymore, but I can put an S-100 in the case, I'll let you know how it fits. Thanks for your help, Harry, I mean, 'gilded'

I don't know about the badge, either. Might have been from a music store somewhere....?? That's been known to happen. I really hate it when you see a 'store badge' dead center on an old Tweed Deluxe cab, 'H&H Music, Houston Texas'!!

Different strokes - I think that's cool - kind of like finding that perfect run down diner on a small highway...

What do they call you for short, Ygg, or drasil?

Yep, I like it on an instrument case. It doesn't bother me much on Fender tolex, like on this old Twin Reverb:

I don't even mind store decals on the back of a neck (usually. There are some darn silly store names out there from the bad hair decades!). But when it's dead between the amp handle and the front 'Fender Deluxe' metal logo, it clutters up the look.

Good advertising, though!

JS would have finished production circa 1977. I've never seen a JS case with the accessory compartment that big. They usually stop at the crossbar that supports the neck.

I vote for non-Guild if only because the "ghost" of the missing badge does not match what I imagine the ghost would be for any of the Guild badges I have seen. We need to get HattedFrau excited about all Guild cases and not just those for his time frame and instruments of interest.

Well, here is a long scale 302-f in a very similar case to mine. The carpet is a little shaggier, but I think both cases are made by the same company.
And frono, you are right the string pocket is short:

Here's a 302 case with cushions:

In addition to the size of what I will try and remember to call the string pocket, it occurs to me that the genuine Guild cases that I have seen for solid bodies before the Pilot also have the foam block in the lid to help keep the neck stable. That is also lacking.

frono,

That is a good point and you are probably right. Now, I have to try and find some other brand of bass that goes with that case. That shouldn't take long........................................................................
