Between periods, I'll get down to the curling club, curl one, and get back up to the hockey game in olympic fashion. 8)

Serena vs. Maria for the women's tennis gold medal?
Kobe, LeBron, and other NBA all stars/millionaires shooting for gold?
*Just a couple of examples that don't do it for me. :? Joe

You don't think any of the non-American athletes are millionaires in their own country? Think again.

They earn every dollar Joe and it's a much shorter career than most, don't begrudge them a little fun across the pond!

At least we are not North Korea; They reward the medal winners and send losers to forced labor camps.

Everybody gets paid. http://finance.yahoo.com/news/us-olympic-medal-winners-bonuses-170523656.html

My opinion on the Olympics is that it should be about amatures and not professionals. As far as tennis goes, these people are already rated in the world, tournament after tournament, year after year. Their Olympics is Wimbledon and the Open series. As for basketball (I hate basketball anyway), if it's going to be an Olympic sport then at least maintain some integrity by sending U.S. college players instead of U.S. pros. No!!! I don't care what other countries do, the U.S. needs to be at a higher standard.

Also, I don't think that Gold medalists of the previous games should have to "qualify" in preliminary rounds. What the heck is that all about?

Peace

I'm with Joe and Doc and Scratch. No more "Miracle on Ice" wins for the USA. Just another 50 point win by the basketball team. Ho hum...

Just my opinion.

When deriding the "pros" and looking back to the good old amateur days it's good to remember how that all started. The Olympic amateur rules came directly out of the British class system. Essentially the upper crust wanted a way to keep the working class out. The only way the working class could get good enough to participate is if they got paid to do so. The upper class had the disposable income and the free time. Hence amateur rules. Keeping that dirty old "pro" money out is easy to do when you have all the money. Fast forward into the 60's and the under the table payments begin. The sneaker companies, in particular addidas and Puma in the summer games and all of the big ski companies in the winter games. The powers that be of that time, the Avery Brundage era, really screwed the athletes. Keep the money out so we can keep it all, the athletes get nothing. Again it's very easy to want to keep things "pure" when you have all the dough. It also has the very predictable effect of forcing the money underground. Nice parallel with Prohibition. Plus with the cold war escalating you have the start of the state sponsored sport system, the old Soviet Union and East German teams. So the whole thing is totally stacked against the athletes who follow the rules.

So, while the Games may have it's issues, what human endeavour of that scope does not, the Olympic movement is actually much cleaner and more 'fair' than it's ever been. That's the way it should be. Let the best athletes in the world compete. If they can make money doing so who are we to deny them that under the fig leaf of amateur rules.
