I've been thinking the same thing, Thanks for spicing it up. I might have to follow your lead.

This is where we encourage Ralf to find the thread (or threads) where folks who have both the carved bass and guitar shared their photos and we can ask how many of those sets are intact today?

Thanks for all the nice comments, friends.

Maybe you guys are right, if I would just leave the case open, I might get these thoughts of, "maybe it should go to someone who would play it more".

but then again, once the lid comes open, all those thoughts disappear!:sentimental:

Were all S-100s mahogany?

I have seen 2-3 (one in person) that were maple, or possibly alder. One was natural and probably a refin, the other two were sunburst -- all three had mahogany necks. The one I handled in person was neat, but it was very heavy (why I'm pretty sure it was maple, not alder), beat up, with busted/missing binding/knobs, lots of missing finish/dings/dents, worn out frets, and needed a neck reset worse than any S-100 I've ever seen. I passed on it at $750 from a local store. I do bet that a maple-bodied one would really scream in a deliciously bright way, though. I've never seen carved ones in anything but mahogany.

I've never seen anything but 'hog. Someone years ago posted one for sale on CrackBay and claimed it was maple and caught a lot of flak for it. That being said, Guild used different kinds of mahogany over the years: some were darker, some lighter. Some were heavier, some lighter. I've had four vintage S-100's and there were differences in appearance and weight even though they were all 'hog and close to the same age.

Just a few years ago...

'73, '74. '75, '77. Only the '73 remains.
