If flattop guitars can have oval sound holes, drum kits can have oval kick drums.

That’s not really oval, just flattened (for flattened, read goofy).

I now forget their name, but there was a German drums manufacturer from the 50/60s that introduced the concept (and perhaps even built the depicted Vox kit)

I just saw an ad for those early ones on Facebook. Can’t remember what group though (it may have been a “suggested” group.)

I knew I'd seen that set somewhere before... the German company I referred to was Trixon, and here's the link to the related Reverb article

"The inspiration behind the unique kick drum design was to give players the flexibility of a kick that changed pitch and harmonics based on where you hit it—as if you had multiple kick sizes available in a single drum."

Which is lovely if you don't mind fussing around with your kick pedal between songs.

That is wild looking. Probably tough to get a new drum head in the shape and size on the fly....
but what the hec looks like it would turn a few "heads"

Mid 1960's. 12" & 13" Toms are serial numbered 179693 and 179693

Had a consolette originally, period replaced with the new swiveling mount. They sound really really good, as do all the vintage Zildjians that are a mix of 50's and 60's cymbals.
