Just vernacular, Charlie. No idea, myself. Maybe "reliced" isn't a legitimate tense of the verb? Google's spell correction appears not to like it too.

That apostrophe misusage is everywhere. It bugs me when I see it too, but I've come to accept it.
Yeah, lice are bad enough, but it really bugs me when one has to deal with being re-liced.

Why pay more? I have absolutely no trouble breaking in guitars myself (or blue jeans or coffee tables or shoes). Charging extra for stuff to look worse is as big a scam as selling tap water in those tiny plastic bottles.

In fairness, though, I did a refinish once that didn't come out very well. I got tired of messing with it and finally called it good enough and put the guitar together. Sounds and plays fine, which is what I care about.
Some of us don't have 20-30 years to naturally relic a guitar.

Personally, I've just never got the whole relic'd thing, not ar all.
Agree wholeheartedly. The thought of purposely scratching and gouging up a perfectly good guitar strikes me as bizarre. To me, it would be like taking a knife and cutting into my forearm.

I recall showing a fellow guitarist a new guitar I had bought who looked it over and said "Now you have to get some really good buckle rash going on the back of this thing". I cringed.

To me, it's an "Emperor's New Clothes" issue. A marketing ploy... but if they sell... hey, it's a free-market system out there. But, it's just not for me.

When I did furniture repair/restoration I'd have people bring me new stuff and ask me to make it look old.
And others would bring me old stuff and want me to make it look new. And I was happy to do it. As long as they don't meet because then they'd just trade furniture and I'd be out of business. :p

Like many, I used to think relics were dumb. Then I got this:

*Everyone* who plays that guitar comments on it. I've had two people offer to buy it from me for more than I paid, and I paid what most would likely think was an absolutely stupid amount of money for such a thing. Both of those guys have contacted me months later telling me that they can't stop thinking about the guitar. It's crazy. I have over 120 guitars and this one is one of my favorites. It's easily the one I grab the most. Of course my preferred style of music to play has a lot to do with that, but still...

I have very expensive pristene Jackson guitars that are in every measurable way "better" than this one, but this one is more fun. Its smooth worn-in neck just feels amazing, and I don't even like maple fretboards and naked necks as a rule. The guitar is an absolute monster. One of the unexpected joys of this guitar is that I leave it leaned up against things all the time because I don't care if it gets scratched or dinged. The guitar is fun in a way that few other of my guitars are.

As for the pic in the OP, that looks like it was in a flood to me.

This is what happens when you build your Man Cave deep in Yanomami territory.

I sanded down two of my bass necks to a matte finish so they wouldn’t be sticky any more from the gloss. Works great! But I would not call it relicing cuz I did it nicely to look good and not sloppy.

I guess it's just that relic is only recognized as a noun, Charlie.
Maybe to civilians, but not to guitar players. A great example is this entire thread!

But you're right, that does explain and excuse the different ways we conjugate it. A standard or custom hasn't been established yet. Although if Fretboard Journal is using relic'd, other grown-up publications might be doing it, too — a sign that agreement is close at hand.
