Paddle-to-the-Sea, a film made in the 1966 by the Canadian Film Board based in the 1941 book by Holling Clancy Holling, was a once-a-year staple in my elementary school growing up (when the teachers wanted a break and/or thought we deserved a movie). I eventually tracked down a VHS copy, but of course, I see it's now on Youtube, like everything else.

I thought it was a regional think, since Duluth was on the Great Lakes and so close to Canada. But looking at the comments, it seems like it was an elementary school staple all over the U.S. It's in three parts, and worth watching, if you've got the time and haven't seen it before. I'd be curious to see who has seen it, though.
