What a neat piece of history. I felt bad for the guy (Mary's nephew) who had to sell it.
I'll bet the shop owner rakes in a big profit!

For those who didn't see it. I'm sorry i can't search for a link now, I'll try later.

That was a sweet Les Paul Custom SG. I agree it was too bad for the nephew. I think he should have went with an auction. It would have sold for way more than the 90k Rick paid him.

And the fact that Les almost told Gibson to stick it. Who knew how close they came to parting ways.

That was some cool history.

And to think, Les hated the redesigned (SG) shape of his signature model.

On Cajun Pawn Stars a week or so ago, a guy brought in what appeared to be one of the first recordings by Jerry Lee Lewis. They brought in some expert to verified that it was real, was Jerry Lee Lewis and that the record was worth about $15,000. The CPS guy offered the seller $30,000 for it, and the guy turned him down, saying he wouldn't accept anything less than "six figures" for it.

Dang, missed that "Pawn Stars", I'll have to watch for the repeat. Rick's no dummy, but ya gotta remember he's also now bearing the risk of a sudden tank in the market and maybe being forced to liquidate it at a loss himself. I'm pretty sure they're gonna want their 90 grand back in the bank with some kind of profit really quick, like less than 60 days.
I like him, he's not afraid to make it crystal clear that 99% of the time he's only in it for the money. I'm sure the seller was fully aware of the trade-off between instant cash and waiting for an uncertain final figure at auction. There's even a show all about that now, guys offered a choice of instant cash or wait 'til auction!

I saw that one. Shop owner really stepped up because he really wanted it, and the seller was a perfect example of a jerk thinking what he had was worth W-A-A-Y more than it really was and expecting a wholesale buyer to pay retail for it besides.
Wonder what he'll do after a couple more appraisals? :p

The guy with the long blonde hair who was trying to sell the Les Paul @ the pawn shop is also the luthier who does repairs @ Cowtown Guitars, here in Vegas. I talked to him about replacing a tuner on my D65s and after talking with him, just bought a new set of tuners and replaced them myself.... for WAY less money. So yeah, BOTH of those guys work at Cowtown Guitars. Doesn't mean their story is necessarily false, although it's likely a setup... but it makes a good story and I learned something about Les Pauls from the 60's and 70's. So that's okay with me. I'd never seen that episode cuz, I would have recognized that guy immediately!!

I have noticed that the show is often scripted, and it doesn't surprise me that some of the items have been planted. I still enjoy seeing the interesting items and learning tidbits of history behind them.

"Staged appraisals" got a couple folks in trouble as noted here. Since that was on Antiques Roadshow around 2000 I wonder whether standards have relaxed because pseudo-reality shows are accepted or whether PBS has always had higher standards?

Any time you have cameras and camera crews filming your every move, people won't be real.

Too bad about it being fake but as already stated, not surprising. I'm like some of you and watch it for the history mainly. I honestly can't stand the characters in the show (except maybe Oldman). The bad thing with this and other reality shows is it shows the worst behavior and personalities. Hell, I couln't stand to be in the room with most of them for five minutes much less watch a show full of jerks for an hour

When Gypsy went to Vegas in November she visited the shop. She said it was really and surprisingly small compared to what you see on t.v. Plus, they would only let a few people in at a time. They threw everyone out because they were getting ready to tape. Yeah, it's all scripted.

Too bad about the Les Paul. Did they decide after all that it was a fake?

Peace

*edit: I didn't mean that somebody has already bought the guitar, I meant "Go for it! Slap down that quarter mil!"

The "Mary Ford" one or the one in a different episode? THAT one just turned out to be a '70's not a '60's IIRC, but the appraisal that determined its actual vintage was part of the episode.
@ the folks who question whether or not it's "reality" TV.. yeah I understand the exceptions taken, but it's still a cut above "the Batchelor" and "Jersey Shore" in my humble opinion.
