Had a PayPal account since they've been around, at least 20 years. Mainly used it for a place to land the money when buying and selling guitars and other music related stuff. It was a pain to get the $$$ out, so several years ago, decided to get a debit card tied to the account which I have had for about 3 years. Six months ago, I had @$2000 in the account.
This past summer two cars needed tires, so I decided to withdraw from PayPal. The tires along with a repair or two got it down to about $200. With a couple of odds and ends, I was down to about $100 to 150. Didn't make sense keeping the $$$ just sitting there. Two days ago, I get about 8 emails from PayPal. Seeing them all come in at the same time, this has got to be a scam.
Off of the top of my head some of them: 1. change of address, 2. account has been permanently closed, 3. All automatic withdrawals have been canceled. If you did not close the account, call customer service immediately, I did. The address was changed to a Bronx address. I'm guessing it's a Russian group.
Called customer service, and surprise, you are talking to someone in India. Was told account was closed and we have no record of it. I said I didn't close anything and what about the $$$ in the account. "We can't close the account unless the account is empty". Let me talk to a supervisor. Same song and dance from him. "The account is closed and we have no record of it". That's funny, when they had to send me an emergency access code to login, it was sent to my phone #, meaning they had a record of my account.
Let me talk to an American representative. "Can't do, all calls are answered randomly". I will be on it again tomorrow or Monday. I'm not getting my hopes up.
The Mrs. has always told me, be careful where you use the debit card. I told her we're getting rid of the debit cards and using only credit cards. With debit cards there is a path to your bank accounts. With credit cards there is not.
Luckily I only had $100 to $150 on the debit card. No doubt I should have done things differently, but looks like I trusted PayPal when I shouldn't have.
