Machine Head? That was one of Our favorite 8 track tapes, which We chucked into My Ranger Mini-Eight, way back in the day.
OOPS! Wrong machine head.

Hello John,

Welcome! Those tuners were not used on any model that was made by Guild. The tuners were made by Gotoh and they were used on a variety of brands during the '70s. In those days ( and actually up to today) most Gotoh tuners were available with a variety of knobs. The standard knobs were more or less modeled after the Grover, Kluson and Schaller knobs that had been on the market for quite some time, but it was also possible for manufacturers to order machine heads with knobs of their own design. I'm not 100% sure if those 'special order' knobs also meant that they were an 'exclusive' for that particular brand, but that is very well possible. The knobs on the tuners that you have I've only seen on 'Aria Pro II Professional' acoustics from the second half of the '70s.

Here's a photo that shows these tuners on an Aria Pro II copy of a Martin guitar:

The version in 'gold' would have been used on the 'higher end' models of the 'Professional' line.

Sincerely,

Hi Hans! If I'm reading your information correctly, I think you are saying that the chrome machine heads on my G-37 are not original? The chrome tuners do appear to be original on my G-37 as far as I can tell but without removing one (which I certainly can do) to see if there are other holes covered or filled there's no way to tell. I've had the guitar for nearly 30 years (bought it used, second owner in early 90s) and decided I would 'dress it up' a bit for all the great years of playing it has provided me. I thought a set of gold tuners, that would match the chrome ones that are on it, would be a nice touch on the guitar. I guess I will keep looking and who knows, maybe stumble across a set someday. I could obviously just throw a set of Grovers, etc. on there but don't want to mess up the headstock with drilling new or hiding old holes.

Hi Hans

Thank you for your prompt reply and the photo, the moderator is sitting on my last comment where I was asking about Guild guitars with gold finishes, I have observed from a cursory look through Google images that most had chrome fitting, the only one I could find was the Guild Starfire VI, I was wondering if they used these machine heads in the mid 70's but I think you recent answer squashes that thought?

I take it the Starfires were built in Japan during that period?

Thanks again, I am most impress with the quality and quantity of the members who are willing to help.

John

Hello Strummingking,

The posting that you quoted was not about the machineheads, but about the 'groverish' tuner knobs!

The tuners on your G-37 are original; they are the same Gotoh-made tuners as the ones pictured in my posting except for the knobs that you will not find on a Guild guitar.

Sincerely,

Hans Moust

Hi Hans (and the group). Just a follow up from the dusussion on what tuners are on my 1976 Guild G37. I believed them to be the Gotoh brand as you suggested but I wanted to stay on my search to find a set of gold ones for my G37. I actually contacted Gotoh and sent them clear photos of the ones I have. They said there are not made my the (Gotoh). They told me that they were made by another company from back in the 70s. So, my search continued and I tried a thousand different search words and I finally found a beautiful set of used Gold tuners to match my chrome ones I had on the G37. The problem is they were listed as 'brand unknown' SO. I kept searching because now it was just driving me nuts that there was no explanation regarding who made the sealed tuners. Then, just today, I came across an eBay listing for the exact tuners I have been looking for and the listing says they are UNIVOX tuners. Here's some (attached) photos of my original chrome tuners I removed and the Gold ones I just replaced them with. They match the ad. I have definitely heard of Univox, just didn't know the made tuners but if the Gotoh tech was correct when I spoke with the, Inivox could be the brand they were referring to. Hers is a link to the ad that shows a tuner like mine called Univox.

I love the looks of these tuners, like the ones on some Guild s-300 or s-70, I think. Does anyone know if Gotoh or others still make that kind of "streamlined"machine-heads?

What a song. Blackmore was unlike any other playing, prototypical.

Nice guitar!

Tuners look 100% fine, a variance on the tuner buttons shouldn't be a huge cause for concern.

If there is a difference from the common buttons, perhaps these are an improvement.

I've held Gotoh tuners maybe with the highest regard of all, the smoothness and precision is hard to beat, by anyone.
