I came across this Bry Webb session. He is playing a D25 and I really love the sound of the guitar/strings, they sound really tamed, percussive.

I was wondering if it's related in part with the kind of strings used or it's more about the guitar, the miking, the playing technique. It almost sound like flatwounds to me.

Any ideas?
Thx

The closeup views don't show wound strings that appear brassy (80/20) or copper-colored (phosphor bronze).

So I'm guessing relatively old, well-used & oxidized strings. No idea what brand.

edit: they appear sort of silver-colored where his pick hits the wound strings, so possibly monel strings?

And I would agree with jed Bruno. You can do just about anything through an amp to manipulate sound for sure. If you'll notice, he's got a condenser on the guitar, and a Baggs in the soundhole.

I don't know if you can identify string type just from looking at them...

To state the obvious, Webb will sound like this no matter the strings. And no one else will pick up that guitar with those strings and sound like him.

I wish it was that easy to sound good...

So true. You know, it usually rare that we hear our own guitars from right in front of the soundboard, but I've done it many times with friends over here playing my guitars, and they not only sound very different from each other, they sound very different from me.....usually much better in my opinion. 😟

Obviously I know this, I'm not that naive ! What I meant is that however they sound pretty dead, an was wondering if it's only dead strings, fingerpicking or maybe some kind of strings that arent overly bright from the start.

Try Martin retros. Give them a day or 2. Nice a dead yet alive.
