The Guild GX series were thinline, routed solid body acoustic guitars with a Fishman pickup system installed. The body was solid mahogany with a spruce top. They were much like the more common Songbird, but instead of a acoustic type mahogany/rosewood set neck, the GX was equipped with a bolt on electric neck in maple with a rosewood fretboard. They were available in black, red, white, and blue.
The available Guild serial number/dating information shows that 771 were built in 1990. The charts also lost one guitar, number 772, built in 1993.
The similar Songbird guitars show over 40,000, (Edit: see Ralf's correction below), built from 1990 to 1996. The records show another 331 built with a modified naming scheme until records cease in 1999.
I know of three GX series guitars owned by members of LTG, myself included. One blue, and two white. I own one (yellowed) white, and just purchased a blue which has not been received. This will bring the total owned by LTG members to four. ( I may have missed some that are unknown to me). I owned one other black GX in the 1990s.
The reason that compelled me to post this information is due to the general scarcity of this model. I have hosted a search on eBay for at least five years. During that time I have not been alerted of a single guitar having been listed for sale. I have also had a search on Reverb for several years without a single guitar being offered. Searches of the internet has also yielded similar results. It is interesting that one of the only GX guitars to be shown on the internet is a red one that was sold by a LTG member.
This perceived rarity has brought me to ponder whether people who own this model tend to keep them, or sell privately, or if the numbers produced, though small, are correct.I
This model is one of my absolute favorite Guilds. It has a few features that were rarely, if ever, produced by Guild. The standout feature is the soundhole plaque this model adorns. This replaced the regular sticker on other models. Also the bolt on neck wasn't a often used build feature by Guild.
