Which, in all probability, a lot of you have never heard of. One of a myriad Asian guitars on the market and, a little star.
I've recently been concentrated on acquiring a small-bodied guitar to have set up as a dedicated slide guitar. I read heaps of recommendations on the 'net which only made a choice more difficult to make. Add to that the fact that I'm in a remote part of New Zealand, hence no chance to road-test anything and, a great many contenders simply are not imported here. Then, while internet surfing, I learned that a credible acoustic guitar publication had awarded their best-guitar award ( 2010 ? ) to a cheapie Loar. Investigations here revealed that the small bodied ( O-size ) Loars are not imported here. Then, while browsing our version of Ebay one Sunday afternoon, there it was; a used, pristine condition Loar LH-200. Buy now NZ $500 with case. Mine !!
The guitar was owned by, of all people, a guitar builder and had been very nicely set-up and Boxwood bridge pins fitted. Alas, I had all his good work undone; raised action, Mammoth Ivory saddle and nut ( because it needed a higher nut and saddle, and I have a heap of Mammoth Ivory ) and d'Addario EJ16 PB's with a 15 and 17 at E and B. This guitar sounded really impressive out of the case and now, set up permanently in Open G, I reckon it's a knockout !
So, if you're looking for a small-bodied cheapie, or beater or, like me, a cool little slide weapon, I thoroughly recommend that you consider The Loar range. I am as pleased to have acquired this guitar as I am for any of my Guilds.
