Got a new LG 55 in on sale at best buy. Old Insignia died, Tried a new Insignia but it would not play computer videos with Hdmi cable.
New smart tvs are too smart. It takes too long to learn how to do the simple things on a new remote. since its connected to the internet LG knows what I watch
Tom, my smart TV is connected to a Roku box and is off the internet (except when I update its firmware). I don't like all the crap that comes with a smart TV. But LG rocks! Good luck and hope you enjoy it.

Are you not using the Roku box for streaming?

That's exactly right, GAD. I think Roku is probably less motivated to collect all the "information" about me that the TVs with embedded smarts are. I could be wrong about that, of course. There's no great answer, and I probably should've said that to @Tom O .

I don't understand. If you're not using it for streaming, then what are you using it for?

I wonder if the various streaming boxes/televisions have an information sharing arrangement.

Generally information like that is sold to advertisers, but not to competitors. It wouldn’t surprise me if any and all smart devices aren’t selling logged info to networks, though, the app is usually what’s collecting data for the app’s provider.

In other words if you’re using Netflix and using a Netflix app *no matter on what device* then Netflix is collecting data. If your using your phone or laptop then the possibilities that the app is logging more than you’d expect is high. This is why modern operating systems make you agree to every little thing an app wants to do.

Hey, sorry, I wasn't communicating well yesterday. I am using it for streaming. I also use it for airplay from my laptop. My Roku box is connected to the internet, but the TV is only driven by HDMI from the Roku box and is not on the internet (except when I put it on the internet to update the firmware).

I think most of the "data" is collected by the streaming apps themselves. I don't really think the Roku box has all that much information to share. Smart TVs themselves probably have more.
