There is also a model, one that Got has that I can't think of the name. It's a sort of pointy acoustic, double cutaway, built by Kim Walker that was billed as allowing the most access to the upper fretboard. Very few of them built....like 20 I think. Grot?

Not sure how many they made, but it wasn't many.

They didn't make many of these either;

I think they built around 92 or so.

It's an X-92 Citron-Breakaway. I wish I had the matching gig bag! :(

I'm sure all this and more will be in Volume II.

Probably that GF-25 I used to have.
I can tell by this and previous posts that you really miss that guitar, don't you? :(
I have a few on my "rare" list too.

I sure do. But, enough is enough. I've healed and am moving on.

merle travis model?

I just read about this Guild in Guitar Aficiando Magazine. Rick Nielsen, Cheap Trick has one of these and wrote a small bit about it. The magazine pic is wild. Could not find that pic, but here is another rock star playin one.

Hans,

There is a post under Acoustics where we are discussing which Guilds are the rarest. We have a few that have chimed in, and a list of sorts of "top 5" acoustic and electric models. Are we even close?

Tim

Hello Tim,

Yeah, I noticed the thread but I'm usually not very fond of taking part in postings that are not about 'facts'.

Now the 'Josh White' F-30 is absolutely a rare guitar but I could make a list with numerous guitars of which I know Guild only made one but then most people would not know what they would be. Not much fun without pictures and a description. And how do you decide which guitar is more rare than the other if they made only one of each?

For me personally, rare does not only mean 'hard to find' but also 'desirable'. Over the years I bought various Guild guitars that I would consider rare and obviously I wanted them. It would be hard for me to say how much more 'rare' one would be over the other . That would be an 'opinion' and you know what they say about opinions!

Sincerely,

Thanks for chiming in Hans. Suffice to say we got one right - and are probably way off on the others. I appreciate your view on facts - but opinions are also a big part of any forum - and just so much fun to share !!

Your opinion are highly valued in any case Hans, and would be worth a glimpse. I do have a couple of "fact" questions.

1. Where there really only 18 JV-52's ever made?
2. What the heck is that guitar that Pete Townsend is holding and how many of those exist?
3. Just how many one-offs did Guild produce anyway? Sounds like there was many more than the "Josh White".

Hello again Tunes,

Yes, I do realize that but I simply don't have the time to 'chat' about guitars in threads that sometimes seem to go on forever; very often because people often respond to the last posting without reading what has been posted before.

1. No, it was 28 pieces. I believe we talked about that when one of the Forum members bought one not too long ago. It might have been a Private Message though.

2. That's a Guild Merle Travis Solomaster. According to the people who were involved with the production of these guitars only 5 were made. So far I've seen and/or documented 4 of those. There is some info about the model in The Guild Guitar Book.

3. I'm afraid that I cannot answer that one. Quite often a 'one-off' was a 'Special' version of an existing model. In the 'old days' Guild didn't store that kind of information. I do have some of the notebooks that were kept by one of the factory foremen during the Hoboken days and there are quite a few 'Specials' in there, but these notebooks are not complete for the entire period. The only way to know about them is when you come across them or when you've been told about one as was the case with the Josh White F-30. Carlo Greco had told me about it more than 15 years ago, when I was doing the research for The Guild Guitar Book. At the time Carlo gave me a complete description of the guitar but it would take until 1997 before I saw the first photos of the actual instrument. In some cases a few examples of a 'Special' were done but again there's no way of knowing that until you come across the next one. When that happens it's obviously the end of the 'one-off' status.

Sincerely,

Hans Moust

This is a cool topic. I play bass so I'm voting for the 20 fret Pilot basses. I know not many were built and I've only seen 2 of them including the one I own.

The "Josh White"

Barring the one-offs and limited runs, I vote for the Josh White. It's got history. That is truly a collector's piece. Maybe not for what Elderly has it advertised for, but a museum-worthy piece nonetheless.

Maybe my 1968 neck through M-85, built for Phil Lesh. I'm no good at posting pics here, but I'm sure someone can find a shot of it and post that. I played it on the Tonight Show with Rosanne Cash a few years ago and I think that video is still on youtube.
