1970s costumes. I had the Spider-man costume like these. I wore till it every year till it would not fit anymore. I think I was 15. Love the Planet of the Apes kid! What a look

I can feel the staple from the mask rubber band pinching my face as I tried desperately to see anything through the tiny eye holes.

I've spent stupid money on serious cosplay for my daughters and me. I've spent the last week designing and 3D printing custom props for these costumes (NY Comic Con is in two weekends). I love every bit of it and the more ridiculous details I can nail the happier I am. I've tried to explain to my kids what halloween was like as a kid in the '70s and they have trouble accepting that pics like these are real.

We didn't get store-bought costumes, so we had to be creative. When I was 9 or 10, my older brother smeared brown mascara all over my face and put talcum powder in my hair. I had some plastic vampire teeth, so into my mouth they went. Then my brother Scotch-taped my ears into points, glued on cardboard claws, dabbed some lipstick "blood" on the corners of my mouth and, voila! I was a werewolf!

The only costume I had like that was "The Phantom". +1 on the sheer discomfort of those! Then we moved to the classic DIY costumes - the hippie, the hobo, the sports player, etc.

Here's one of my favorites we made for my oldest son many years ago. Dryer vents, strainer, phone cable, floppy disks, CD's, etc. He loved it!

The one I remember was one year when it was pouring rain. My sister, best friend and I got dressed in oilskins, rainhats and boots and went as the 3 jolly fisherman. Every house we went to gave us a ton of candy as they didn't want to have it left over and there were literally no other trick or treaters out that night!

I was generally always a pirate in early years. Then in later elementary school years, I would wear one of my Dad's WWII Navy jerseys and hats and carry his duffel bag to collect the candy. My Dad was 18 and about 5 feet tall when he joined right out of high school in 1942, so it was pretty easy to fit into his Navy uniform.
