Okay okay, I know this has been discussed and I've looked at a couple threads, but the search function doesn't cooperate enough for my short attention span. So...

The dude who had the D35 before me rubbed Aqua Velva on the strings. Yeah, seriously - aftershave. Why? I don't know. He said something about James Taylor doing it because he liked the way it smelled. I can't imagine anyone wanting a guitar that smelled like that, but whatever. 'Takes all kinds I suppose.

Anyway, I Febreezed the heck outta the case and it's noticeably better. Any ideas for working on the lingering aura of the guitar (besides setting it outside)? Something to speed up the airing out? Something that can pull the smell out without it taking forever and a day? I was trying to think of something to test out, but I figured best to just cut to the chase since y'all seem to have good advice on just about everything.

Thankie thankie.

-G.

Oh, here's a new pic. Despite the smell, I'm diggin' the hell outta it. Love the bluesy sound. Aqua Velva just doesn't compliment it very well. Stale cigarettes and sour beer would be more appropriate.

Re: Removing odors

Maybe if you clean and polish the body with something like Virtuoso ( http://www.virtuosopolish.com/ ) and then also re-oil the fretboard you'll rub away or at least mask the aftershave. Always thought James Taylor was an Old Spice kind of guy :)

Uh oh...Don't let Fender hear you say that. They might get an idea to branch off of their road-worn series: the Down-and-Out blues acoustic, comes fully stocked with the stench of a life on skid row, without paying your dues!

I was thinking a fresh round of cleaning and polishing would help. Got me some Carnauba and Dr. Stringfellow Lem-Oil right here. I imagine that A.V. smell is deep inside though. Here's a thought I had: how about a dryer sheet inside? The guitar might pick up the smell of one of those, but I imagine it won't linger as long as the eau-de-smarm. Might suck some moisture out of the wood too, which might not be a bad thing. Maybe it'll pull out some of the smell. The humidity in here is just right this time of year, but I have a sound hole humidifier just in case.

Re: Removing odors

My guitars and cases have developed a musty odor from using humidifiers inside the cases.
My answer was to purchase some Scentsy travel dished.
I drilled a very small hole in the lids and placed the containers inside the cases. The guitars and cases now smell much better.
I chose the leather scent.

I am SO sympathetic, I HATE some of the garbage that passes for cologne these days. If I found that on an axe it'd be a deal breaker, period.
Suggestion one: Replace the scent with AXE (get it?)
Suggestion 2 (the real one): Put Baking soda in something that'll let it soak up the smell without spilling all over the inside of the guitar. Baking soda is an old trick for keeping you refrigerator deodorized 'cause it'll literally absorb odors. I'm thinking it'll take some time (couple months?) of in-case storage but I'm sure it'll cut it down gradually. Corollary suggestion: Dr. Scholl's "Odor Eaters". Seriously. At least it'd be a cheap experiment. :D

Re: Removing odors

i tried putting ammonia in a spray bottle, and spraying the inside of the case, then closing it...the next day most of the smell was gone, no more musty smell....it is a good odor remover, just spray and leave. I've used this on furnature too. works well. Steffan

That was another idea I had, but I'd have to come with something to put the baking soda in. And believe me, it's always in supply around here!

   I KNEW there was another idea in there that just wasn't bubbling up to the surface yet! Cat litter in a nylon stocking! Seriously! It's coarse enough to stay inside the nylon but its made to absorb odors!

Q,

You could send it to me and I could first deodorize it for you, and then work a little Northwest mojo on it so it would come back to you smelling of western red cedar and Douglas fir. :D

I'm here for you,
Joe

Re: Removing odors

When I bought my Deco, the guitar smelled like aftershave. I cleaned it up real good, but still smelled. I leave the guitar hanging out, and it took probably at least a year before the smell was completely gone.

Re: Removing odors

Well, Q' as usual, I have nothing constructive to add. I was just amused by the title of the thread and wondered if it indicated the Moderators were commencin' to clean house, at LTG!
