Could I replace the Gold Tone humbusters in my DeArmond X-155 with Seymour Duncan antiquity P-90 dogears? The Dunkins are 1.6 inches wide. Would that be enough to cover the hole left by the Gold Tones?

I've put Antiquities in mine, which looks alot like Axel Girnus's guitar pictured below.

AJ,

This might be the one. He has different size spacers/shims to cover the 'bucker holes and get the poles closer to the strings.

Charlie,

Nice to meet you.

That looks great. Is it an X155? Did it have 'buckers originally? I take it the neck pup was close enough to the poles without a spacer/shim? Do you have anymore pics?

Darryl, I used Allparts spacers on that guitar, and they more than cover the hole. And yes, Goldtone humbahblèhyukkiepickups.

All modern P90 covers are the same size - except Seymour Duncan. Duncans have the narrower footprint of Gibson P90's pre-1954, all others are the exact same width. (nobody in their right mind - except the good folks at Duncan - is going to have their own expensive mold made when you can get generic plastic covers for next to nothing from different sources)

Generic modern P90 covers are a hair too narrow to cover up the humbucker cavities in the DeArmond guitars - but only just a hair, so if you're thinking of spacers that are the same footprint as the cover - they should be half a millimeter wider.

And to answer your question about that blonde guitar pictured : take another look, there's a spacer under that neck pickup - and for good reason. without the spacer, the pickup will sit much too low to sound good.

It's good news that I missed the spacers. I thought they wouldn't look very good, but I didn't even notice them!

You've enabled me to narrow it down to a probable choice: Duncan with Lollar spacers/shims. Lollar has a lot of different sizes to choose from.

Just one thing though, before you spend all that dough - you have a Guild with Franz pickups, right? Because the DeArmond is not going to be nearly as nice, seriously. Nicer than with the 'buckers, but compared to the Guild, it's not even worth the trouble.
I sold mine - I got it for airplane travel gigs because I didn't have a proper flightcase for my X175's, but since having discovered my Starfire (III) case fits the overhead compartments, I sold the DeArmond and I've been taking the Starfire - and have been much happier on stage. Sax player in my band hated that guitar, he called it "the plastic one", he could tell with his eyes closed if I was playing that thing.

Ooops. I should have mention that the Guitar I'm modding is a DeArmond X155. It has Dearmond Gold Tone bumhuckers in it. So I need to cover a hole that is about 1 3/4 wide (44.45 mm). Standard P90 footprint is 41mm.

:?: You did mention that all along, no? I've modded both a DeArmond X135 (single bucker version of same guitar), and the X155, and my observations above are about that.
