That reminds me I pulled "Cuts to the Chase" out to review this weekend and my memory was once again not what it used to be...it's got a heavy world beat influence (not a bad thing)and my favorite song is actually the first one: "Lives in the Balance". Then I was inspired to put some more fret wear on my D40, the sooner to get it to its first re-fret!
Interesting how I see more and more shots of him with a single pickguard intrument now, when the double-guard used to be one of his trademarks. It was one of the big attractions about the signature model for me, and I mounted it (very carefully) baby, as it should be!

Re: Richie Havens

Richie used to use monster picks, maybe 2.5 inches per side triangle...his hands are huge, and he is a big man...the tops kinda got sawed in half with his playing, maybe he's mellowed in his playing lately, but those guitars took a beating with or without the 2nd pickguard...Steffan

I think the double pickguard looks GREAT.............If i had a D-40 I would certainly have it that way too.
I'd be happy to "settle" for a D40 with a single pickguard.
I'm strong....I could handle it.
Joe
OK I know this is a veer but I've said before, the neck on my '40 is definitely a bit thicker especially after you get past the 3rd fret. Don't know if it's peculiar to mine or if it's a "build target", since I've heard others mention it, but you NEED to be a little stronger to handle it!

Yeah I think it's in the interview on his website, he said he'd use 'em up in about a year! But I'm tellin' ya, the two MOST influential parts of Woodstock for me were Richie and Carlos Santana (I didn't quite understand Hendrix yet), and I knew in my heart that Richie was just somehow the coolest, being able to rock so hard on an acoustic instrument...it was ATTAINABLE for me....I had lots of electric heroes but he was the ONLY guy doing what he did. I stuck with acoustic because of that same factor. I had very little competition!
