I think he must have got his saddle too low so stuck those in there on a couple strings to get them up some so they wouldn't buzz?

I think I remember seeing that back then when he was popular (or more popular, I guess I should say).

Not sure though.

His first album was awesome (pre-Woodstock). Handsome Johnny, and others, were on it, and I think San Francisco Bay Blues was too? Beautiful.

I think it's uber-cool you can still get his signature model, and they don't put the second pg on it but include it.

I still love the marching rhythm that he achieves, breaking the sound barrier in the last few seconds of the song....he had amazing rhythm in his strumming.... :D Steffan

He can get almost like a tenor banjo rhythm stum going sometimes. I can't sustain it very long, but he seems to be able to do it indefinitely!

I use the phrase 'pick it up, as in pickitup pickitup pickitup when I'm playing with one of the rhythms...but I doubt anyone will ever do Richie better than Richie....the man was/is a powerhouse....Steffan

I seem to recall seeing Richie Havens in the 70's playing in open E, just barring chords with one finger. The man can strum.

That remains his style today I believe. Pretty unique. He's found a way to self-accompany and serve the song. Good on Guild to always seem to keep his model in the lineup.

Actually the D40 wasn't in the lineup from '93 until reissued in Corona....wonder what he used during that time...maybe special orders would be my guess.
Richie was one of my major inspirations to stick with acoustic guitars, ever since I saw Woodstock as a high school freshman...and I tried to imitate that style without a clue that he was using open tunings!
"High Flyin' Bird" is one of my faves, both his version and the Airplane's. Got a chart for it too, whenever you're ready!

Ah, um then where did my '99 come from? They were reissued while Guild was still in Westerly, but I forget the year.

I stand humbly corrected. Went to Guild's website 'cause I knew they had been dropped for a while...and the D40's stopped at '93...but the listings themselves stop at '98!
"all I want is the truth...just gimme some truth..."
Thanks Doc.
