RIP Tony Oxley

Tony Oxley was a great UK Jazz drummer, someone who did not shy away from the extremes, as comfortable and skilled with superb, conservative straight Jazz as with the wild outsides of the envelope.

Gone at 85

With Bill Evans and Eddie Gomez in 1972 -- about 16 min.

And at the other extreme, with THE GUITARIST whose name must not be mentioned (No, not Mary, Mary, Quite Contraryversial but worse). Get thee behind me, Derek!! (Ooops, I mentioned it.) -- about 30 min (of total horror).

I had forgotten about this album, The Gordon Beck Quartet-Experiments With Pops 1968

Here is Oxley, together with Yorkshire buddy, John McLaughlin, in a competent MOR Pop-Jazz setting.

Gordon Beck: Piano
Jeff Clyne: Bass
Johnny McLaughlin: Guitars
Tony Oxley: Drums

Unfortunately, not all titles are available on Youtube. I dimly remember that the cover of The Who's I Can See for Miles was the most exciting of the lot, but it's not to be found online.

1. These Boots Are Made For Walking
2. Norwegian Wood
3. Sunny
4. Up, Up And Away
5. Michelle
6. I Can See For Miles
7. Good Vibrations
8. Monday, Monday

And then a bit later in 1969 there was Oxley on John McLaughlin's debut solo album, Extrapolation, more than a little edgy at the time.

Play list for the album
